7 Of The Biggest Missed Opportunities In ‘Star Wars’

Beginning with A New Hope, George Lucas (and later, Disney Studios) led us through a space odyssey in a galaxy, far, far away. Yet with all the adventures, characters, and epic battles, there are still more stories fans hoped for from the journey. Here are seven opportunities missed thus far in the telling of Star Wars.

7. Moving Away From the Skywalker Family

Star Wars is full of interesting characters, exotic species, and conflicts that rock the galaxy. However, every story seems to focus on characters from the Skywalker and Palpatine families. The original series tells the story of Luke Skywalker. The prequels focus on Anakin, his father. The sequels end with Palpatine's granddaughter taking the name Skywalker. In fact, every victory or defeat throughout the galaxy seems to be caused by a Skywalker. This is getting better in the various Disney+ series, but Luke still shows up to save the day in The Mandalorian and has an extended scene with Grogu in The Book of Boba Fett. Even Obi-Wan Kenobi seems to focus more on Leia’s character development than Obi-Wan’s.

6. Force Sensitive Children

While most films focus on the battles between Jedi and Sith or between Rebels and the Empire, the subject of force-sensitive children was quickly dropped. The Last Jedi pays special attention to these children and suggests that they will rise to be the next Jedi order or Rebel alliance, but they’re never mentioned again. Focusing on this new generation would be a way to finally move past the Skywalker saga.

5. Han Solo Gone Too Soon

The Force Awakens brings back classic characters from the original trilogy, including Han Solo. However, less than halfway through the movie, Kylo Ren, Han’s own son, kills him in cold blood. This seems to cement Kylo’s commitment to the Dark Side and makes his later redemption arc difficult to believe. Instead, the relationship between Kylo and Han should have shown the internal conflict between the light and darkness in Kylo Ren, making his conversion seem more credible.

4. Deeper Dive Into Jedi Training

While the prequels do an excellent job exploring this, there’s still so much we don’t see about the Jedi. It’s explained that Jedi must be free from attachment and most choose not to marry, but there’s no explanation why. There’s also an air of mystery around the Jedi Order. Characters like Han start out thinking it’s a long-lost religion until he meets Luke and sees the Force in action. Having a film or series focused on Jedi lore would be a great way to address lingering questions about the mysterious Order.

3. Obi-Wan’s Slow Descent Into Isolation

As mentioned above, Obi-Wan Kenobi focused far more on Luke and Leia than the titular character. Instead of showing viewers Obi-Wan’s arrival and exile on Tatooine, the series creates an adventure stemming from Leia’s kidnapping. Obi-Wan starts the series as the Ben Kenobi character from A New Hope and undergoes marginal character development to reconnect with the force. Everything else is about Leia, Darth Vader, or even Reva. The series could have begun with Obi-Wan’s conflict about leaving Anakin to die on Mustafar and his rejection of the Force before approaching the Leia storyline.

2. Leia And Han’s Story After Episode 6

After the final victory in Return of the Jedi, Han and Leia have a chance to live in peace. In The Force Awakens, Leia is a General married to Han and their son Ben has defected to the Dark Side. There’s a lot of story to tell in this empty space, worthy of far more than a Star Wars opening crawl. Although Leia’s still a Skywalker, this would be a nice way to tell the Solo story. Connecting to Solo and The Force Awakens, this theoretical film could be part of its own trilogy.

1. The Rise of Yoda

The existence of Grogu in The Mandalorian shows that Yoda’s species isn’t always wise and stoic. Grogu makes some poor choices throughout the series, which means that Yoda’s personality must come from learned behavior. As there’s less known about Yoda’s species than the Jedi Order, a film or series showing Yoda learning the ways of the Jedi and struggling to keep his emotions in check would be a great way to expand on the Star Wars lore.

With Disney’s latest batch of Star Wars series, some of these possibilities may be just over the horizon, while others are stories lost to alternate visions or buried in the past with Luke and Leia’s lightsabers.
