While there is no shortage of shady criminal underworld characters developed over the years in the Star Wars universe, perhaps no other character better personifies it than Jabba the Hut. Jabba was first introduced in A New Hope (1977) but was initially only mentioned by Greedo as having been sent to collect a bounty placed on Han Solo by the notorious gangster. Jabba was mentioned again in The Empire Strikes Back (1980) as the motivating factor behind Han’s planning to leave the Rebellion, so he could pay off his debt to Jabba.

However, his departure was postponed by the invasion of the Hoth by the Empire. Han was later captured by the Empire, frozen in carbonite, and given to bounty hunter, Boba Fett, to deliver to Jabba on Tatooine. Jabba was originally seen in his original corpulent alien form in Return of the Jedi (1983), where he held the frozen Han Solo, as well as Leia, Chewbacca, and later, Luke, prisoner and attempted to have them all executed in the Sarlacc Pit in response to Luke defeating his prized Rancor. Jabba’s unwillingness to bargain with Luke for Han’s freedom led to his untimely demise at Leia’s hands (and chains).

In the 1997 and subsequent special edition releases of the Star Wars original trilogy, Jabba’s original (deleted) scene for A New Hope, which featured Jabba as a portly human male, was digitally altered to insert Jabba (mostly) as he appears in Return of the Jedi. Jabba was also featured briefly in The Phantom Menace (1999) and The Clone Wars animated feature film (2008). In a Star Wars Visions short, he also made a non-Canon appearance in ‘Tatooine Rhapsody’. However, as much as we think we know about Star Wars characters, we find that there is almost always more to learn about them. As such, here are seven interesting facts about Jabba the Hut that every Star Wars fan should know (but might not).

7. Jabba’s actual full name was Jabba Desilijic Tiure. His official title was “His Excellency Jabba Desilijic Tiure of Nal Hutta, Eminence of Tatooine.” However, Jabba was commonly just referred to as “Jabba” or “Jabba the Hutt” in the Star Wars movies and series.

6. Jabba lived for 604 years before his death (600 BBY-4 ABY).

5. Jabba allied his criminal Empire with several different factions during his lifetime. During the Clone Wars, Jabba agreed to an alliance with the Republic after the Jedi saved his son, Rotta, from the Separatists and uncovered the kidnapping plot by his nephew, Ziro the Hutt. Towards the end of the Clone Wars, Jabba was coerced into supplying Maul’s Shadow Collective with resources to help them to take control of Mandalore. During the Galactic Civil War, Jabba was coerced personally by Darth Vader into supplying resources to the Empire following the destruction of the first Death Star. In exchange for his cooperation, the Empire left Jabba’s criminal Empire alone and helped crack down on his competitors.

4. Jabba has a son, Rotta, as featured in The Clone Wars animated feature film, although his post-Clone Wars fate is currently unknown, as he was never seen nor referenced in the Star Wars original trilogy.

3. Jabba presided over the fateful Boonta Eve Podrace in 32 BBY, where Anakin Skywalker won his freedom and the Jedi the parts they needed to repair their damaged starship, as featured in The Phantom Menace.

2. Jabba’s massive sail barge destroyed in Return of the Jedi was named The Khetanna. It is also seen very briefly being attacked by Separatists during the introduction of the Clone Wars animated movie.

1. Jabba is immune to the Jedi Mind Trick, although whether Hutts in general or just Jabba are immune to it is unknown.
