5 Things We Want From The James Gunn DC Universe

Hopes are soaring high now that filmmaker James Gunn and producer Peter Safran have taken the helm of DC Studios. The duo recently announced their long-term plan for the DC Universe. Following Marvel’s footsteps, the first installment of the new improved DC Universe has been named Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters and will comprise of 10 different projects.

This includes brand new Superman and Batman movies alongside Supergirl and Swamp Thing features. In addition, there will be a new Green Lantern series, a series based on the origins of Wonder Woman’s birthplace, and another one on Amanda Waller. So while things are still under development, here are our two cents on what James Gunn could do to make the live-action DC Universe work this time.

5. Take Time Develop Individual Characters

The live-action movies have so far not done a great job at getting the audience to care for individual characters. Having the Justice League movie out there before the Aquaman and The Flash origin movies and with no Cyborg origin movie in sight has not been a very good move. This especially does not work for viewers who are not well-versed in the comics and are meeting these characters for the first time. Not putting the ensemble together without giving individual characters time to develop might be a better approach this time.

4. Bring In More Interesting Villains

The DC animated universe has beautifully portrayed the breadth of colorful DC villains over time and perhaps the live-action movies need to take a page from their book. Further, DC needs to develop the characters of the villains too! Instead of simply cramming them all together the way they did in Suicide Squad, the motivation behind their villainous acts has to be done justice, especially given that most of them have a beautiful origin story in the comics. Also, build the big boss-level threat more slowly, giving the audience time to acquaint themselves with the major villain enough to realize the scale of the menace. Needless to say, Marvel has already aced this act with Thanos and now with Kang.

3. A Lighter Vein

To be funny when the world is coming to an end might be a difficult task, but DC needs to learn the delicate art of balancing humor and drama better. It gets strenuous to sit through over 2 hours of seriousness with very little comic relief, except for unintended facepalm moments like the controversial ‘Martha’ scene in Batman v Superman. Here again, DC could learn a thing or two from Marvel and keep things a little more hearty the way James Gunn did for Guardians of the Galaxy.

2. More Creative Storylines

DC could experiment with more genres and alternative storylines to keep the surprise factor intact, especially for comic book veterans. It would be fascinating to watch story arcs such as Neil Gaiman’s Batman: Whatever Happened to the Caped Crusader? or the much beloved Batman: Arkham Asylum played out on the big screen. Variety could be the special sauce in James Gunn’s new DC era catering to the palettes of viewers from all walks of life.

1. Make The TV Series And Movies Coherent

When the TV content does not match the stuff on the big screen, things get really confusing! Two different storylines for the Flash at the same time are not something we would like to rack our collective brains over. Incoherence, in general, doesn’t help the story and we all know to what great lengths Marvel went to sort out the Spiderman issue. We hope that DC will make the effort to make all its content look like pieces of the same big picture.

DC has been a great example of persistence and we do hope they get it right this time!
