5 Things We Can’t Wait To See In 'Hogwarts Legacy' And 1 Thing That Worries Us
The release of Hogwarts Legacy is less than a month away. It finally brings together fans of the eponymous Harry Potter series, and fans of 19th-century teen drama.
Here are 5 things that you should be excited about before packing your trunk and setting off for Platform 9 and ¾…and 1 thing that does give us some worry.
5. No Harry, Ron, or Hermione
The game is set in the late 1890s, so don’t expect to see any of your favorites from the books or films appearing. This is exciting though as it means there is a whole new cast of fresh-faced heroes (and villains) to get to know without the mountains of baggage and history that come with the current cadre. Series fans will get to see ancestors of their favorite characters like Phineas Nigellus Black, voiced by Simon Pegg.

4. Four Down, Three To Go
Players will actually be starting their Legacy in their fifth year of Hogwarts. This means that we will hopefully get the chance to delve into some advanced magic right off the bat. The Sorting Hat, however, will still play some role in which House the player is in, but how this works in practice has yet to be seen
3. Points DON’T Make Prizes
Possibly due to the fact that the House Cup was clearly rigged almost every year in favor of Gryffindor, the player's actions will not directly impact their House’s total score. Like the Sorting Hat, the Intramural competition will affect the plot, but you getting caught staying out late to visit the Whomping Willow won’t cause your Housemates to turn you into a rat for costing them victory.
2. Live Ammunition
We have seen a variety of magical creatures on display, including ridable Hippogriffs, terrifying dragons, and the ubiquitous fantasy fodder, the troll. Players will also (and potentially hilariously) use some creatures in combat e.g. a Mandrake to stun enemies. Here’s hoping Arragog’s grandad is on our side as no amount of Expelliarmus is going to stop that bad boy
1. The Wizarding World Awaits
Players won’t just be limited to the halls and ever-changing staircases of Hogwarts during their time playing Legacy. Avalanche Software has already shown expansive Hogwarts grounds, Hogsmeade, Diagon Alley, and the Ministry of Magic. Undoubtedly they will have a few more locations up their robe sleeves to surprise fans and newcomers alike.
And the one thing that worries us…
Spellcasting
Many have talked about how stylish Legacy’s dueling system looks, but we know that players will have to unlock new spells as the game progresses. Even actors from the series itself admit that waggling a thin 11 inches of wood and hoping for an effect does not have the same visceral feel as swinging a lightsaber or gunning down enemies with the DL-44. Is there a chance that the rhythm-based, combo-chaining gameplay might feel unsatisfying? Or even dull?
Hogwarts Legacy is scheduled for release on February 10, 2023
