Video games seem to be growing in popularity recently amidst the talk of mergers, new consoles, and new games. There has also been some recent discussion about which games would make great television shows or movies with The Super Mario Bros. Movie hitting theaters this past weekend, the massive success of HBO’s adaptation of The Last of Us, the Five Nights at Freddy’s adaptation getting a release date, Amazon’s Fallout television series wrapping filming, and Bungie’s announcement that Destiny is being made into a television series. This lead me to wonder which games would make great horror movies. Sure, you have easy answers like The Quarry, The Last of Us, and Back 4 Blood, but what about the truly horrifying moments that are hidden within the confines of non-horror games? Let's take a look at five non-horror games that would make great horror movies!

Let’s be honest, the Harry Potter universe is begging for some kind of horror content! With Death Eaters, Voldemort, Dementers, and Aragog, there is plenty of material to pull from. There are plenty of locations within the game that would make great horror content. I think the Haunted Hogsmeade Shop would fit the best. The ghost and creatures that lie within the shop would make for a fantastic horror film!

The Star Wars galaxy has always provided fans with plenty of horror-worthy content, and this game is no different. While you could easily make a horror film from just the planet of Dathomir, its creatures, and the Nightsisters, this game also provides two other great options. The first is the Inquisitors that Cal Kestis routinely fights on his journey. They are terrifying, and their brutality knows no bounds, making them ideal horror villains. The second is the Shadowlands on Kashyyyk where literally everything is trying to kill you! You could set an entire horror series on this planet and never run out of horrifying things to use.

I doubt anyone would think about this game when trying to name video games that should be made into horror films unless you are a fan of the 2008 cult classic Repo! The Genetic Opera. The game's futuristic but violent world would make an amazing setting for truly horrifying body horror or even a possible slasher. With so much crime and backstabbing going on, it would be almost impossible to track down the villain or know who you could trust. The virus that is mentioned early on in the game and its mode of transmission would also be a fascinating route to go for a Cabin Fever-style horror film.

2. Skyrim

This is another game that I doubt most people would think of when it comes to horror, but the game provides great opportunities for zombie and slasher horror films. Scattered throughout the game are ancient crypts where hordes of Draugr wait for unsuspecting victims. The zombie-like creatures are terrifying! Also, Blood on the Ice is an in-game murder mystery where you must follow the trail of bodies left by a serial killer and try to find them before they escape Windhelm. This quest line would make a great slasher film, and the setting of the game would provide a truly unique entry into the slasher genre.

1. Destiny 2

This non-horror game should genuinely come with a warning for players. The game features some truly terrifying creatures and locations that would make for not only a great horror film but a great horror series! One of the scariest aspects of the game is its Halloween content, Festival of the Lost. Lost sectors of the map are haunted and feel like you are playing through a mini-horror film. The Hive Knights and Wizards are another truly horrifying part of the game that are present on multiple different planets all year round.

The nightmares in the game also work best for a horror film because they provide plenty of jump scares! Hidden throughout the Moon, these interactive black and red figures will begin screaming in agony when players walk near even if they are on the other side of a wall!
