Diego Luna returns as the Rebel spy Cassian Andor from Gareth Edwards’ Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016) in the series Andor (2022) on Disney+ September 21st. The series is set to feature one of the Star Wars fandom’s favourite characters in Mon Mothma (Genevieve O’Reilly returns) and sees Stellan Skarsgård and Fiona Shaw play new characters to the universe in Luthen Rael and Maarva respectively.
Tony Gilroy takes over writing responsibilities in the series after serving as an assistant director for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016). Some of his other work include writing credits for Michael Clayton (2007) and Duplicity (2009) as well as a production credit for Nightcrawler (2014). In celebration of the latest instalment in the ongoing Star Wars story, we are going to look back at the person behind our favourite Rebel spy. 5. He Was Born In Mexico City

Diego Luna was born into the bustling, artistic mecca that is Mexico City. The city that gave the world the artistic majesty of Frida Kahlo, the generational visionary filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón, and the brutal brilliance of boxing champion Juan Manuel Marquez, seems to never run out of gifts. The son of a set designer, Luna grew up around performance and was absorbed by the world of drama when he was very young.
4. He Started His Career In Telenovelas

The superstar got his start in the world of Latin American soap operas. This is not an unusual pathway for acting talent from Mexico. Some telenovelas are even adapted for American audiences as Jane the Virgin (2014-2019) was an adaptation of Juana la Virgen (2002). Some other actors that started on, or have starred in telenovelas include Salma Hayek, Gael García Bernal, and Sofía Vergara.
3. He Is Passionate About Photography

Luna revealed in his episode of the ongoing GQ series 10 Essentials that he has a passion for photography. He explains that his grandfather was a photographer and after his passing, his father and him learned to take and develop photos with his equipment after his passing.
He has an appreciation for analogue photography because of the intention and care one has to take. He explains that he is passionate about [translated from Spanish] “the whole process, that doesn’t happen automatically, that requires you to think about the best way to photograph. A moment, an object, a person.”
2. His Made His Big Break With His Best Friend

Diego Luna’s career fundamentally changed after starring in Alfonso Cuarón’s Y Tu Mamá También (2001). Diego Luna starred as Tenoch and his childhood best friend, Gael García Bernal, played Julio. After the film Luna would go on to star in a string of films that include the notable hits of Frida (2002), Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights (2004), and Milk (2008).
1. He Protested Against The Mexican Government

Just a teenager, Luna found himself standing up for what he believed to be right. The actor explained to GQ that he stood up for Indigenous rights alongside the Zapatista Army of National Liberation. “With the encouragement of family and teachers, a teenage Luna would skip school to join the protests.” Luna stated “I was 15 years old, and I was feeling the responsibility of being a citizen in my country. I remember those days as being important. They defined me.”
