10 Best Summer Horror Movies
For many people, the idea of watching horror movies is saved for spooky season, but for horror fans there is never a wrong time to watch a horror movie. Some great horror movies are set in the winter and around Christmas, but I would argue that some of the best are set in the summer. Let’s take a look at 10 of the best summer horror movies and where you can watch them this summer!
10. Turistas (2006)
This is such a great horror movie, but I feel like almost no one knows about it. A group of American tourists are on a dream vacation in Brazil when after a night of partying they wake up on the beach robbed and confused. After they accept help from a local man, they soon find themselves in a horrifying situation.
Turistas is available to rent on Amazon Prime.

9. The Cabin In The Woods (2011)
This movie is so much fun because rather than being a true horror movie it is more of a spoof on horror movies. It combines all of the things that make horror movies great and all of the things that make them cheesy. A group of friends decides to take a trip to a cabin in the woods, and everything that can go wrong does. This movie has a really cheesy but pretty great twist halfway through which is why I added it to this list.
The Cabin in the Woods is available to stream on HBO Max.
8. IT (2017)
Both of the IT films would fit on this list, but I prefer the remake so that is why I included it on this list. The town of Derry is plagued by missing children, and after Bill’s younger brother joins the ranks of the missing, he and the “Losers Club” band together over their summer vacation to get to the bottom of it. The sequel is also set in the summer, but it pales in comparison to the first film.
IT is available to stream on HBO Max and Hulu.
7. Us (2019)
I will forever think that this is Jordan Peele’s best film. The Wilson family decides to escape their busy lives by going on a beach vacation with their friends. Unfortunately, things quickly take a turn for the worse when their son runs into a bleeding man on the beach. I can’t say anything else about this movie without spoiling it, but I genuinely believe that this is a movie everyone should see at least once. Not only is the movie amazing, but the twist is so good!
Us is available to rent on Amazon Prime.
6. Deep Blue Sea (1999)
This is one of the best shark movies ever made, and it includes one of the best moments in any Samuel L. Jackson film. On an isolated research vessel in the middle of the ocean, a group of scientists are searching for a cure for Alzheimer’s disease. After discovering a way to enlarge the sharks’ brains, their research lab becomes the setting of a battle for survival.
Deep Blue Sea is available to rent on Amazon Prime.
5. Sleepaway Camp (1983)
For most horror fans, this is one of the most recognizable films, but it seems to be missed by everyone else. Shy and traumatized Angela Baker attends Camp Arawak with her protective cousin Ricky, and things quickly take a turn for the worst. Campers begin turning up dead and the killer reveal is one of the most shocking moments in cinematic history.
Sleepaway Camp is available to stream on Peacock.
4. The Meg (2018)
This is the newest movie on the list, and I am so excited about the sequel that was just announced! A group of scientists attempting to explore the mostly unexplored Marianas Trench is attacked by a Megalodon leaving a small group of their people trapped at the bottom of the ocean. Naval Captain Jonas Taylor is brought in to help, and everything that can go wrong does. This film is easily one of the best new shark movies!
The Meg is available to stream on Hulu.
3. I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997)
This is easily a classic that I feel like most people have seen at least once. After a group of friends has a horrifying accident, they break apart and go their separate ways. One year later, they return to their hometown for summer break and the sins of their past come back to haunt them. This film has one of my favorite twists!
I Know What You Did Last Summer is available to stream on Netflix.
2. Jaws (1975)
Does this film need any explanation? The small community of Amity Island is racked by a string of shark attacks, and when the Mayor refuses to close the beach, things only get worse. The community’s new sheriff is forced to step up and take care of things himself along with a marine biologist and a gruff fisherman.
Jaws is available to rent on Amazon Prime.
1. Friday The 13th (1980)
This is another film that needs no explanation. It is the ultimate summer horror movie, and it set the bar for all other summer horror films. After the death of a young camper years earlier, Camp Crystal Lake is open for business again, but someone doesn’t want the counselors to make it to opening day. This film is amazing and features one of the best twists in horror history.
Friday the 13th is available to stream on Paramount +.
