I FINALLY Watched ‘Monty Python And The Holy Grail’
For this series, I struggled the most with picking which film I would watch in the comedy genre. I have never been a big comedy fan, so I had to turn to my husband for advice on which comedy film he thought everyone should see at least once. He insisted that it was Monty Python and the Holy Grail. The only thing I knew about Monty Python was that they were a comedy troupe from Britain that was absolutely hilarious. Unfortunately, I can’t say that I will be watching this movie ever again.
If you’re a fan of Mel Brooks’ style of comedy in films like Robin Hood Men in Tights or History of the World Part One and Part Two then you will be able to appreciate the style of comedy that is Monty Python and the Holy Grail. There is plenty of humor that will have you laughing out loud, but it isn’t enough to make this film anything more than something fun to watch with a few beers (if you’re over 21!). The real-world commentary about political events happening during the 70s when the film was released and jokes about the lack of budget add some extra humor to the film.
RELATED:
The film follows the Monty Python troupe as they portray a multitude of characters. The story focuses on King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table as they hunt for the Holy Grail. They are consistently faced with different struggles and most of them are pretty hysterical. Each of the knights gets their time to shine in their short tales that are scattered throughout the main narrative. There is also a modern-day murder “mystery” thrown into the mix!
You know that you are in for some good laughs when John Cleese and Eric Idle are heading the cast, but even they couldn’t fully carry the film. The story is all over the place and not in a fun comedy way, but in a way that leaves you with so many questions that it takes a lot away from the film. The ending of the film is also one of the worst endings I have ever seen in a comedy. I was so disappointed and looked at my husband with my jaw on the floor wondering if I missed something. The costumes in the film are great, and the writing is pretty good too. Unfortunately, the film feels like you are watching a Rhett and Link skit on Good Mythical Morning, but no one could quite agree on what the premise was supposed to be. I can recognize the humor in the film, but it is definitely not something I will ever watch again. This is a good film to watch at least once because it has a ton of great quotable lines, and it is definitely an experience… but don’t expect this to be like most comedies you have seen before.
Rating: 5/10
