Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is the newest installment in the Monsterverse franchise. One of the best parts of this franchise is that it has the flexibility to do different things, which sets it apart from the Toho Godzilla movies. It’s a fun movie, with an okay story, entertaining characters, and most importantly, awesome fights.

The stories in these Monsterverse movies are always a bit silly, but that doesn't mean they’re not fun. It’s also miles better than the story we saw in Godzilla vs Kong. We return to Hollow Earth, where Kong seems to have made a home for himself. He is still lonely, however, and is always searching for more of his kind. Back on normal Earth, our researchers at Monarch are getting strange readings from Hollow Earth. These readings are also affecting Jia. Dr. Ilene Andrews (Rebecca Hall), Trapper (Dan Stevens), Bernie (Bryan Tyree Henry), and Jia (Kaylee Hottle) all venture down to Hollow Earth to see what’s happening. While there, they get more than they bargained for and make a massive discovery, that could affect all of civilization.

Meanwhile, Kong finds a younger creature similar to him and decides to follow. This brings him face to face with the Skar King, a titan who wants to conquer civilization. The two fight and he is wounded when the Scar King brings out Shimo, an ice-powered Titan. He gets away and can find his humans, who help him out with his arm. The story of our humans and Titans finally comes together and we learn that Godzilla and Kong must put their differences aside, and work together to save their lives, and humanity, from the Skar King.

We most recently saw Godzilla in Toho’s Godzilla Minus One, which is separate from the Monsterverse. If you thought Godzilla was cool in that, he is somehow even cooler in this movie. Being affected by Hollow Earth signals, he hunts down various Titans. He decides to go after Tiamat, who is residing in the Arctic. After defeating the Titan, he absorbs the radiation coming from it later, thus turning himself pink. This comes in handy in the final fight, and when you see Godzilla all charged up, it’s one of the coolest parts of the movie. After a long battle, he likes to take a quick nap in the Roman Colosseum, which in my opinion, is adorable. Even though I prefer Godzilla, Kong was great in this, as it focused more on his story. By the end, he was able to find the family he so desperately wanted, and it was wonderful to see. Let’s hope this isn’t the last time we see these two Titans team up with each other, because they make a pretty great duo.

I feel like the characters tend to fall flat within the Monsterverse franchise, however, this movie changed that. They were entertaining and had some charm to them. You wanted them to get out alive. Each had a quirk that added something to the story. The standout however was, Kaylee Hottle, who plays Jia. Her character had the coolest arc in the movie, which was exciting.

The fighting was incredible and the best part of the movie. There were many fights and various Titans on the field, which made it much more exciting. Nothing will top the final fight, however, when Godzilla and Kong finally team up. It’s definitely worth the wait. While it's not the best Godzilla, or Kong movie ever made, it is worth a watch for anyone who is a fan of the Monsterverse. The movie is a good time, and will have you cheering during these Titan battles, because after all, who doesn’t enjoy watching big creatures fight each other?
