Deadpool & Wolverine, premiering in theaters on July 26, 2024, marks the third installment in the Deadpool franchise. If you came to see Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool and Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine in a hilarious buddy-comedy, you’re getting that and so much more. You’ll laugh. A lot. You might even want to cry a couple of times. Deadpool & Wolverine blends the seriousness of Marvel serials with Deadpool’s dark humor, Wolverine’s alcoholism, meta and raunchy jokes, and plenty of fourth-wall-breaking moments.

Following Disney's acquisition of Marvel Cinematic Universe and 21st Century Fox in 2019, Deadpool and Wolverine can finally appear alongside the X-Men and the Avengers. Deadpool & Wolverine is officially the first R-rated film in the MCU, setting records even in previews on Thursday, July 25. The picture set records even in Thursday night previews, earning an impressive $38.5 million, the highest-grossing R-rated film in domestic previews.

There’s no single lead between the two headliners; they’re costarring. Reynolds referred to the movie during production as the Deadpool/Wolverine film, while Jackman called it Wolverine and Deadpool. Part of the excitement for the newest installment of the Deadpool series included having access to the MCU characters for the first time, free from the Fox-branded control of the past.

Director Shawn Levy, known for his collaborations with Reynolds in The Adam Project and Free Guy, helms this project. The film boasts cinematic fight scenes filled with Deadpool's signature banter, and choreography reminiscent of the comic books. Deadpool & Wolverine weaves in clever time-travel elements that add depth and intrigue to the plot. Its exceptional concept ingeniously allows for the resurrection of previously deceased characters, bringing them back into play through alternate timelines. This creative approach opens up a wealth of possibilities, breathing new life into familiar faces and storylines.

For the best movie-going experience, you should have seen, or at least be familiar with the storylines from X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Deadpool, Logan, Deadpool 2, and Loki seasons 1-2. Knowledge of other films based on Marvel comics, especially the X-Men movies, would also be beneficial. If you’ve seen each of the Marvel movies, even pre-MCU, and some of Ryan Reynolds' other roles at least once, you’ll be golden.

As always, Stan Lee continues his Marvel film cameo streak, though these might be better attributed to him as posthumous tributes. There are a ton more cameos, including Ryan Reynolds' and Blake Lively's children, Inez and Olin. Keep an eye out for surprise appearances from other MCU favorites and unexpected celebrity guests that add extra layers of excitement for eagle-eyed viewers.

While the mid-credits and post-credits scenes are fun, they’re not mandatory to watch. There isn’t any obvious connection to an upcoming movie or production, but they are really entertaining. These scenes do offer more laughs and unique nods to Marvel lore. It’s not recommended to watch them before you see Deadpool & Wolverine if you want to stay spoiler-free.
