'Wolf Pack' And 'Teen Wolf'? Why The Werewolves On Paramount Plus Are Kind Of Confusing
Werewolves have been present in various forms of media for a long time. Over the years, while the definition of a werewolf hasn’t changed, their looks certainly have. Their legends first started as folklore, with iterations in different countries. Then they were added to stories. One of the earliest was in the 1897 novel, Dracula by Bram Stoker. Michael J. Fox even played a teenage werewolf in the movie Teen Wolf. The idea of teen werewolves hasn’t changed either, with shows like Teen Wolf, and its most recent film, Teen Wolf: The Movie and Wolf Pack further exploring what it means to be a teen werewolf.
Teen Wolf was originally a series on MTV that followed teenage Scott McCall, who was bitten by a creature in the woods. He eventually turns into a werewolf. The show concluded in 2017, but on January 26th, 2023, a movie was released on Paramount+. The movie brings back most of the characters that fans were familiar with, including an adult Tyler Posey, Tyler Hoechlin, and Crystal Reed. The movie delves back into the show's mythology, including the fate of Allison who died earlier in the series. The producer of the movie has likened it to a seventh season of the show. This, however, wasn’t the only werewolf content to surface on Paramount+ recently.

Wolf Pack has a more adult tone to it and includes explicit language, sex, and violence. The show follows four teenagers who are dealing with the aftermath of being trapped in a wildfire in California. From the fires, something feral and deadly emerges. It kills some of the trapped teenagers and bites two others. They’re slow to understand what is happening to them. The show features a small supporting role from Buffy the Vampire Slayer alum, Sarah Michelle Gellar who plays an arson investigator. Critics were only given two episodes to screen, and the reviews don’t seem to favor it. While it’s been a long time since there’s been a werewolf show, society has evolved.
Even though both feature werewolves and are done by the same creator, they remain unrelated. Since both shows are by the same creator, there will be similarities, but both entities will remain separate. This also gives the creator a chance to listen to fans' complaints about the later seasons of Teen Wolf and how supernatural elements were handled, and fix it for Wolf Pack.
If Wolf Pack does well, we could see the resurgence of hot teen werewolves again. The show seems to be telling a more understandable and relatable story, instead of just focusing on the eye candy. Even though society has evolved from its Twilight phase, this could be the show to bring back supernatural thrillers to our TV.
