What Was The Aeon Engine?

From the moment that he learned that Padmé Amidala had died on Mustafar, Darth Vader (aka. Anakin Skywalker) was determined to find a way to bring her back. Over the years he would make several attempts to resurrect her. One of the attempts involved the Aeon Engine, and it was almost successful in bringing Padmé back to life.
The Aeon Engine was a technological device created on the planet Mustafar to harness the energy of the life-giving Bright Star crystal. Long prior to the rise of the Empire, Lady Corvax and her husband Dorwin Corvax resided on Mustafar. At the time, Mustafar was nothing that fans would see in Revenge of the Sith. Instead, it was a lush planet thriving with life. Following the death of her husband, Lady Corvax would create the Aeon Engine to harness the power of the Bright Star crystal to bring him back. The attempt failed dramatically and would destroy most life on Mustafar.

Following that incident, the Aeon Engine would remain hidden from the world for a long time. It would be rediscovered by Darth Vader during the reign of the Empire when built his fortress on Mustafar. This story was told in the Vader Immortal VR video game series, which was released in 3 parts in 2019. The series took place between the events of Revenge of the Sith and Rogue One, focusing on a Force-sensitive smuggler who was taken captive by Darth Vader and forced to find the Bright Star.

With the help of the reluctant smuggler, Vader was able to find the Bright Star and the Aeon Engine and begin the resurrection process. He was almost successful as Padmé’s human form began to appear. However, just as quickly as this hope was created, it was shattered when the smuggler (who was a descendant of Lady Corvax) destroyed both the Bright Star and the Aeon Engine.
Throughout his time as Darth Vader, the former Jedi Anakin Skywalker made several attempts to revive his wife. These attempts were explored in Charles Soule’s Darth Vader run. Darth Vader #22 revealed that Darth Vader built his castle on Mustafar with the end goal of resurrecting Padme. In his early days as Darth Vader, the Emperor was very aware of Vader’s need to reunite with Padmé, and allowed Vader to construct his fortress on Mustafar. While Vader never succeeded in this quest (he would fail nine times), his quest for power ended up giving Palpatine more control over Vader.
Through the comics and the VR game, we continue to see Darth Vader struggling with his relentless drive to control the world around him as he searches for ways to resurrect Padmé. While he was unsuccessful, it shows that the love of Anakin Skywalker continued to play a role in the actions of the Sith Lord Darth Vader.
