This Is The Chord That Has Elevated Disney’s ‘Star Wars’

When you think of Star Wars, the mind tends to wander and thinks about the visuals, the story, the characters of a galaxy far, far away but for many of us the music is what transports us to the cockpit of the Millennium Falcon, Luke’s X-Wing or the deck of the Executor.

Many of us recognize the classic John Williams score created in 1977 and was the inspiration for all the films and even the spin-off series and films. With the acquisition of the Star Wars by Disney, keen-eared fans seemed to notice a subtle shift in the force which makes for a better audio enjoyment of the movies.

But don’t let me explain when we can get the expert, Charles Cornell, over at YouTube to explain.

As Charles explains in the video, outside the main movies, subsequent composers always try to keep up with John Williams but shift everything just enough so it sounds the same but fresh. Charles explains the chord which appears to alter the Star Wars landscape in the modern era occurs at the moment in Rogue One, which is probably one of the best in the entire cinematic universe, when Darth Vader attempts to claim the stolen death star plans for the first time.

In this scene, the main score is holding in a G minor chord but when Vader’s lightsaber ignites, its tone is an E chord which overwhelms the audio senses when added in with the score. But what Charles discovers in his listening is the lightsaber itself is running at a different chord too. Even he admits it most likely was an accident but certainly a happy little accident to be sure.

The composer for Rogue One was Michael Giacchino and is no stranger to genre movies or Disney having worked on their projects like Up, The Incredibles and even more recently as director for the Marvel special Werewolf by Night.

With a unique resume like his, I think it certainly is safe to say that Giacchino could be compared to John Williams with his reach and unique scores. Perhaps with Williams’ announcing his retirement from the business and talk of new Star Wars movies we could see Michael Giacchino become the go-to guy.
