'The Rings Of Power' Finally Reveals Who Sauron Is
From the beginning of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, people have been asking one question: Who is Sauron? The guesses ranged from Adar to Halbrand to The Stranger. Well, we finally have an answer. Halbrand is the Dark Lord Sauron who will wield the One Ring during the last alliance of elves and men. The reveal came in the Season One finale and shocked many fans.
Personally, I hadn’t guessed Halbrand, but I wouldn’t say I liked any of the other choices people were speculating about. I thought that Sauron hadn’t been introduced yet. Adar was an obvious villain, but he was a dark elf, while Sauron was a Maiar. In Tolkien’s lore, the Maiar are almost like demigods. They were created by the One but are lower than the Valar and higher than elves, dwarves, and men. The Stranger never seemed likely to me, either. Sauron had been in Middle Earth since the First Age, while The Stranger had newly arrived in the world.

Halbrand wasn’t on my radar because he didn’t jive with the canon as I knew it. Still, the clues were there from the beginning. His very first words were, “Looks can be deceiving.” Sauron famously deceives the king of Númenor, leading to the island’s downfall. He told Galadriel pretty early on that he had done bad things. He also said that he wasn’t the king of the Southlands. Instead, he had stolen the king’s symbol. Halbrand was also a talented smith, which he showed while in Númenor. Finally, he wanted to find a place for himself in Númenor. That was to set his plan in motion to destroy the Númenoreans.
The break in the canon is because Tolkien told Sauron’s story and of the Rings in the Silmarillion, which Amazon doesn’t have the rights to. In Tolkien, there is no Halbrand. Instead, Sauron disguises himself as someone named Annatar.
It will be interesting to see where they go with the Halbrand/Sauron character in season two. Now that Sauron has been revealed, they might take this as an opportunity to realign with Tolkien. Or they may decide to continue with the Halbrand story arc. Either way, I’m looking forward to it.
