Rumors flew around the internet that runaway hit M3GAN has a post-credits scene. We’re sorry to report that it does not, but the ending definitely left enough unanswered questions to tease a possible sequel. Since we’re talking about the ending, that means spoilers, so here’s your warning!

As Gemma becomes aware that she’s created a monster that is too smart for its own good, she tries to figure out any weaknesses that M3GAN may have. M3GAN’s sole purpose is to “protect Cady at all costs,” so she’s ready to do anything to be her sole caregiver.

RELATED:

M3GAN and Gemma (and eventually Cady) battle to the death over who will be Cady’s caregiver. M3GAN wants to incapacitate Gemma because she is keenly aware that if Gemma dies, Cady will go to live with her grandparents in Florida, and M3GAN is out of the picture.

Using Bruce, Gemma’s trusty yet bulky robot, Cady (after finally realizing that M3GAN is AWFUL) manages to disable M3GAN. But since we’re talking about a killer robot doll movie here, M3GAN returns for one more final jump scare only to have her face ripped off and her central processing chip destroyed.

As the dust settles and the cops arrive, Gemma’s Alexa-type home assistant moves on its own, possibly hinting that M3GAN isn’t gone and that she transferred herself to another AI device.

In an interview with Collider, producer James Wan (MalignantSaw) said:

“What I will say to that is, in any of my movies, whether it’s The Conjuring Universe, or Saw, or Malignant, or M3GAN here, we like to think of a bigger world. For me, it’s about creating the world, and knowing who the characters are, where the story could potentially go, and then building this bigger world, and then going into that and going, “Okay, I’m telling this particular story, but I know other stuff that’s going on.” So if we’re fortunate enough to have sequels, then we have an idea of where we want to go.”

M3GAN’s rare January box office success of 30.2 million (completely surpassing its $17-20 million estimates) should be an immediate greenlight for a sequel, if not more. The backing power of producers James Wan (InsidiousAquaman) and Jason Blum (Paranormal ActivityUs), and writer Akela Cooper (Malignant) is clearly a solid combination for a quality horror film, so hopefully, we’ll see more M3GAN in the future.
