Jed Brophy is probably not a household name many recognize, but for Lord of the Rings fans, he’s basically a tenured professor. His name is one of the only ones to appear in the credits (sort of) of each live-action Lord of the Rings production, including the new Prime series The Rings of Power.

He’s had a busy career, appearing in numerous movies and television shows, though mainly in a supporting character role. Still, it’s quite a resume to have appeared in each Lord of the Rings production.

His first role is actually uncredited. According to IMDb, he was one of the ringwraiths in the Fellowship of the Ring. Each wraith is one of the nine former kings of men corrupted by Sauron’s ring plot. Referred to by the Hobbits as black riders, Jed’s appearance is entirely shrouded behind black robes and masks.

That changed in The Two Towers. While he’s still hidden behind makeup and prosthetics, Jed took on two roles in The Two Towers. One of those was the orc rider Sharku. If that’s not familiar, he was one of the warg riders who assailed the fleeing Rohirrim. In particular, he’s the one who attacked Aragorn and tied him to his warg, sending him over the cliff. In addition to that, he played Snaga. Snaga will be familiar to fans as the orc craving meat after being on the run to bring Merry and Pippin back to Saruman. He, like Sharku, lost his head when he tried to carve up the Hobbits.

He also played an orc in The Return of the King, but there’s no official credit. Some images on Google suggest he played the orc that shouts “inspection” as Frodo and Sam are disguised as orcs, but confirmation cannot be found.

His most prominent role was when Peter Jackson returned to make The Hobbit. This time, Jed ditched the orc makeup and added a whole bunch of hair to play one of the 13 Dwarves in Thorin’s expedition, Nori. He’s the brother of Dori, and the cousin of Ori, also members of the expedition. He’ll be familiar to fans as the Dwarf with the three-pointed hairstyle. While still a supporting role, because he doesn’t say much in the course of the movies, considering he’s one of the group and not another character outside it, it’s probably his largest role in the franchise.

It doesn’t stop in The Hobbit. Brophy was brought back for the new The Rings of Power series on Prime. This time, he went back to his orc ways. In The Rings of Power, Brophy plays one of the orcs under Adar, trying to create a home for Orcs. His credits cover several orcs, likely due to the limitations on crew due to Covid-19, but he does play one of the named orcs, Vrath. Vrath is the one that has a flat nose but a large pointy nostril and a skull-cap-looking helmet. Like his other Orc roles, however, Vrath meets his end at the point of a blade.

At this rate, it’s safe to say that Jed Brothy will continue to appear in Tolkien-related productions, so it would be likely that he will appear in season two. But, sadly, that’s not for another two years.
