The remake of the classic horror game Dead Space was released this month by EA, and there is lots to talk about. The remake highlights some of the best features from the 2008 version while adding and changing some parts of the game for a better quality of life. The game’s graphics were also redone, and now players will feel even more scared of getting jumped by Necromorphs than before. Ah, immersion. With that being said, let’s dive in on what has changed in Dead Space.

Isaac Clarke, voiced by actor Gunner Wright, continues as the protagonist, and the character gamers will play as. Inspired by previous games like Resident Evil, the minimalist HUD remains one of the experience’s best parts. However, this does not mean that it could not be improved. The 3D map from 2008 is now 2D, making it easier for the player to navigate the USG Ishimura and all of its dark and scary corners. Clarke’s engineer suit was also enhanced, highlighting its details and different pieces. Clarke’s mining equipment/weapons also got an upgrade, now able to tear all sorts of flesh and limbs in the most advanced definition possible.

This time around, Wright had more space to - well, literally - show his abilities. Clarke is no longer a simple recipient of orders and commands from other characters in the game. He has a more prominent voice and will react to what is happening. This, though, is not excessive in any way. Clarke keeps to himself throughout most of the game. He’ll remain calm when there is silence and nothing important happening. But if he is facing a necromorph and there is action going on, the sound of him breathing harder will be present in the game.

The remake also positively changes a few things. It tries to dwell more on the relationship between Clarke and his wife, who was aboard the Ishimura. Holographic memories similar to The Division or Doom accentuate this, showing what happened to her and to the other crew members. IGN also mentions that the remake altered some essential parts of the game. In the 2008’s version, there is a sequence in which the protagonist sits in a gunner position, taking out asteroids coming in the ship’s direction. This is no longer in 2023’s edition. Now Clarke is forced into outer space and has to guide himself along the ship’s hull, avoiding asteroids. This time around, he has a guiding system and is able to use this to aim the vessel’s massive cannons.

Overall, the remake of Dead Space continues the trend of the past. It provides players and the public with a cautious, third-person, over-the-shoulder approach that has had success in the past with this formula. With a few tweaks to the gameplay and big upgrades to the graphics, this remake puts Dead Space again at the top of the industry, where it deserves a spot.
