The long-awaited Star Wars drama, Andor is finally out. It premiered with 3 episodes on September 21st. It tells the story of Cassian Andor, before the events of Rogue One. In the premiere, we were introduced to a few characters who will be helping Cassian on his journey. One of these characters is Maarva Andor, played by the lovely Fiona Shaw.

We get to know Maarva through flashbacks. She and her husband are scavenging on a crashed spaceship on Cassian's home planet of Kenari. She meets young Cassian, who at the time was known as Kassa, and takes him off-world to Ferrix to save him from the impending Republic ship threatening Kenari. We first meet her in Andor, after his time on Morlana One. She and Cassian argue, but it comes from a place of love. She wants him to be safe, and tell the truth about what he's doing. "She's someone with a big heart, and a great moral compass," Fiona Shaw told Total Film

Fiona Shaw spoke to Total Film about her character. "She is a member of a group called Daughters of Ferrix. Who are a community of women who keep the moral standing on the planet very well". She also mentions that when we meet her in the series she is old and unwell. Shaw mentions how many of the women in Star Wars are iconic characters, but never felt any pressure when joining Andor. She says that "Tony makes you feel like you were chosen to be in it". From what we've seen of Maarva so far, I wouldn't be surprised if she joins the list of iconic women from Star Wars.

Throughout Star Wars, we've been exposed to many stories between father and son. Young Anakin and Qui-Gon Jinn, and Luke and Vader. Mothers in Star Wars haven't had as big of a role, and tend to be killed, like Shmi and Padme. Andor bringing in a strong mother and son bond to Star Wars is refreshing, and something we haven't seen before.

From how episode three ends, it's unclear whether Maarva will make an appearance again. Cassian's fight is far from over, and he needs all the help he can get. While Shaw doesn't say if we'll see her character again, she does hint that Maarva still has an important role to play, so I wouldn’t be surprised if we get to see her again in Andor.

Andor is now streaming on Disney+ and drops new episodes Wednesdays.
