A Wookiee Jedi? Gungi’s Return in 'The Bad Batch' Episode 6 Explained
Star Wars: The Bad Batch season 2 episode 6, “Tribe”, brought back a fan favorite from The Clone Wars. In the episode, Gungi, a Wookiee Jedi, had been kidnapped by a droid crime syndicate called Vanguard Axis to be sold into slavery. While attempting an escape, Omega (of the Bad Batch) found Gungi being attacked by two droids. Omega helped Gungi escape with the help of Clone Force 99.
Gungi was last seen in The Clone Wars. He was mostly an incidental character, except for one four-episode arc known as the “Young Jedi.” The arc was comprised of episodes 5 (“The Gathering”), 6 (“A Test of Strength”), 7 (“Bound for Rescue”), and 8 (“A Necessary Bond”) from the fifth season of the series. At the beginning of this arc, Gungi and a few other younglings (accompanied by Ahsoka Tano and Yoda) went to the planet Ilum to find the kyber crystals for their first lightsabers. After successfully gathering their crystals, their ship is attacked by pirates. Ahsoka is kidnapped and the younglings stage a rescue. Afterwards, they complete their lightsabers and are promoted to Padawan Learners.

For Gungi to appear in The Bad Batch, he must have survived Order 66, although there is no explanation of how. It is also unclear what Gungi has been doing since the Great Jedi Purge. Presumably, he has been on the run from Vader and his inquisitors.
After the Bad Batch helped Gungi escape Vanguard Axis, Gungi wanted to go to the Wookiee home world of Kashyyyk. Clone Force 99 brought him to Kashyyyk only to discover that the Empire was already there, stripping the planet of resources and capturing Wookiees. Gungi and the clones fought the Empire’s forces and liberated a village, whose elders agreed to take Gungi in as one of their own.
Kashyyyk did not fare well during the reign of the Empire. The planet was ravaged, and most of the Wookiees were sold into slavery. There’s no telling if the Bad Batch will be involved in that storyline. It was nice getting to spend time with Gungi again; hopefully this won’t be the last we see of him.
