Will ‘Picard’ Season 3 Mention Worf's Character Development From ‘Deep Space Nine’
Season three of Star Trek: Picard successfully reunited the entire cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation, which is set to culminate in what is sure to be an epic series finale for the series. Worf, the former Klingon Chief of Security for the Enterprise-D, is included in the reunion. After the first Next Generation movie, Generations and the destruction of the Enterprise-D, Worf accepted an assignment at Deep Space Nine as Chief of Operations, where he stayed for the remainder of the titular series, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.
However, he reappeared on the Enterprise-E with the rest of the crew during the events of Star Trek: First Contact and Star Trek: Insurrection. At the conclusion of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Worf left Deep Space Nine with Chancellor Martok to become the Federation Ambassador to Kronos, the Klingon homeworld. However, without further explanation, Worf was back to serving on the Enterprise-E, seemingly as a regular crewmember, in the penultimate Star Trek: The Next Generation film, Star Trek: Nemesis, which is set a while after he departs from Deep Space Nine.

Season three of Star Trek: Picard revealed throughout the season that genetically altered rogue Changelings, formerly of the Dominion, have been involved in a plot with the Borg to exact vengeance against the Federation for the abuse they endured at their hands during the Dominion War, which ended up being a major story arc in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. As such, Worf has been featured during the season as a self-described “subcontractor” working alongside series regular, Raffi, and the Enterprise crew’s former crewmate-turned-Maquis-turned Starfleet Intelligence Officer, Ro Laren. He worked with the others to uncover the Changeling conspiracy, a role that seemed particularly suited to Worf, given his experiences fighting the Changelings during the Dominion War while stationed at Deep Space Nine.
However, aside from some acknowledgment of his time on Deep Space Nine fighting the Changelings during the Dominion War, the references to Worf’s character development on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine on Star Trek: Picard, let alone any of The Next Generation films, have been curiously scant, especially compared with series regular, Seven of Nine, who originally crossed over from Star Trek: Voyager.
Worf introduced himself to Raffi with the moniker of “Slayer of Gowron”, referring to him standing up to and killing the former Klingon Chancellor during a duel, to prevent him from endangering the Federation towards the climax of the Dominion War. He also indirectly referenced Odo, the former Changeling constable who served for many years aboard Deep Space Nine, as being “honorable”, but did not name him directly.
Worf has certainly changed somewhat from being a hot-blooded Klingon Warrior who lived for glorious battle at the beginning of Star Trek: The Next Generation to a more spiritual and pacifistic Klingon by the time of Star Trek: Picard. However, this transition in his character seems to be more about where Worf is in his life right now, more than two decades since he departed Deep Space Nine for the last time, and not necessarily how he was shaped by his experiences on Deep Space Nine. Worf’s experience with dealing with Changelings has proven useful in identifying and understanding the threat posed by the rogue changelings during the current galactic crisis, however.
