We’re back again for the next installment of More Than Just a Skywalker Story, where we explore areas of the Star Wars universe that could be explored in live-action. These articles are meant to demonstrate how easily Disney could create a compelling story outside the same few decades they keep creating their content. We’ve taken a chronological approach to some of the significant events that have been chronicled in the Legends universe, which was previously canon but has been relegated to its own universe since Disney acquired Star Wars. So far, we’ve examined the discovery of the force, which lead to the origins of the Jedi order, which then lead to the origin of the Sith. We now take a look at the Great Hyperspace War.

After the fall of the powerful Dark Lord of the SithMarka Ragnos, there was a power struggle for leadership. The field of contenders was eventually narrowed to Ludo Kressh and Naga Sadow. Sadow was a progressive expansionist who wanted to push the borders of the Sith empire as far as they would go, while Kressh was fiercely protectionistic. There would be many disagreements and arguments, and the competition even spilled over into a fight at the funeral of Ragnos, where he had to return as a Force ghost to stop the fighting. However, fate would tip the scales for Sadow. Two explorers of the Republic desperate to pay off debts, Gav and Jori Daragon, were attempting to find new trade routes when their ship ended up over the Sith funeral world of Korriban. They were apprehended, and discussion of what to do with them fell predictably along ideological lines.

The protectionists wanted to kill them to remain secret, while the expansionists tried to convince the rest of the leadership that they were spies and that there would be an invasion if they didn’t act first. Sadow took advantage of the situation, kidnapping them and making it appear they had fled. He sent Jori away with a tracker on their ship, framed his rival, and subsequently was chosen as the new Dark Lord of the Sith. He also kept Gav at his castle to bait Kressh into his death and train Gav in the ways of the Sith and eventually use him in the invasion. Then, using the homing beacon, he led an attack against the Republic which would begin the Great Hyperspace War.

The Republic was caught off guard, despite being warned by the planet that received the freed explorer. Between the element of surprise, organization, and the secret weapon of Sith alchemy, the Sith were winning the war. It was fought on many fronts across the galaxy, but Saban remained in his meditation sphere to use his knowledge of the force to aid his armies through meditation. The Sith armies had successfully made their way into the space above the Republic capital of Coruscant, where they were overpowering the Republic forces. Unfortunately for the Sith, Gav Daragon had a run-in with his sister Jori, which led to him questioning his alliance. He shot at Sadow’s mediation sphere, which interrupted Sadow’s meditation, eventually leading to defeat in the space above Coruscant and the collapse of the Sith armies. From here, the Sith empire collapsed and was lost to history.

This particular chapter of Star Wars history would be best suited for a series instead of a movie. It could be done close to the abovementioned events, which already make a relatively complete and compelling story. The style of the show could be very similar to a Game of Thrones type of show, where we follow several different characters through this royal political drama unfolding. The amount of subterfuge and the perfection of the plan would play well in this style of the show, especially if some of the details were changed slightly so that people familiar with the story were still surprised, such as having the first season finally ending with a confrontation between the two front runners with (who they’ve portrayed more sympathetically) defeating Saban, only to discover he is as unaware of the explorers’ location as him. It could then be revealed that it was actually the number 2 among the protectionists responsible for it all along. This would eventually lead to a season 2 where the sympathetic would be outmaneuvered and a season 3 where the war takes place with a great sibling story anchoring the whole way through.

There are so many possibilities for shows and movies, not just in subject matter but also in style and tone. With so many of these stories already written to some degree, the more projects they keep putting out in a narrow timeline, the more strange it is to keep walking the same ground. Next time we will be looking at the Old Republic.
