Darth Vader Fights Padmé’s Handmaidens In ‘Star Wars: Darth Vader’ #30
Which one is Queen Amidala again? Star Wars: Darth Vader #30 from Greg Pak and Luke Ross has Padmé Amidala’s handmaidens making a difficult choice. After capturing and interrogating Ochi of Bestoon, the handmaiden Dormé took Sabé’s identity and infiltrated the Executor. While on the ship, she discovered that Sabé had taken on a mission to assassinate Jul Tambor, grandson of Wat Tambor, and end his regime against the Empire on Skako Minor.
However, after failing to kill a pair of traitor stormtroopers, Vader determined Dormé’s identity and informed her that Sabé was loyal to him. The 30th issue begins with Vader offering Dormé the chance to join the Empire as well, as the rest of the handmaidens prepare to liberate Dormé and recover Sabé from the Sith. Ochi expresses doubt over this idea, to which Vader tosses him with the Force. When Dormé refuses Vader’s offer and insists that Sabé will disobey him as well, Vader says they will see as the comic cuts to Sabé on Brentaal IV.

Having blasted Jul Tambor due to his unwillingness to surrender to the Empire, Sabé quickly makes her escape, taking Jul’s wounded body with her as she retreats on a ship piloted by ZED-6-7. She had intentionally fired above Jul’s heart so that he would survive. Once he is resuscitated by ZED-6-7, Jul expresses confusion over Sabé’s actions. Sabé explains that she wounded Jul in order to stop him and his followers from marching to their deaths at the hands of Vader.
When Sabé insists that killing the Dark Lord is futile, Jul responds by summoning his secret weapons, a platoon of rebuilt battle droids Vader had cut down over the years. By studying their memories, Jul thoroughly studied Vader’s fighting style and was now ready to unleash his droid army on Vader. Sabé claims Vader lacks any weakness, to which Jul retorts that he does have one weakness; Sabé.
After finding the Imperial shuttle that Dormé had been transferred to, the remaining handmaidens, Eirtaé, Rabé, and Saché, followed the ship to a planet called Fedalle, where they were confronted by Vader with Dormé as his hostage. Despite regretting that her fellow handmaidens had sacrificed themselves, the handmaidens insisted on fighting and met Vader in combat. While the handmaidens together presented a decent challenge, they were ultimately subdued by Vader.
However, before they could be struck down, the handmaidens revealed that they seized coding from Vader’s armor during the fight, allowing them to finish Dormé’s sabotage aboard the Executor. The handmaidens then demanded Sabé’s return to them, or else they would destroy Vader’s flagship. Though before they could, Vader was contacted by Piett from the Executor, who patched Vader into a transmission from Jul. Taking Sabé prisoner, the Skakoan told Vader to come and get them. Realizing they would need Vader and his resources to help Sabé escape, the four handmaidens reluctantly joined Vader as they left to confront Jul, much to Ochi’s dismay.
Darth Vader #30 is an action-packed issue that paves the way toward a fun confrontation with Jul and his droid army. The handmaidens working alongside Vader is an exciting visual and opens the door to dynamic action set pieces. Jul’s plan is also enjoyably ludicrous, as he recruits all of the battle droids destroyed by Vader and uses their pieced-together memories to counter his fighting style. As the handmaidens join Vader to fight Jul and his droids, we’re left to wonder if this will merely be a temporary or permanent alliance. Either way, we’ll have to see if this fight will go soft and smooth or coarse and rough.
