Aphra Speeds Toward Darth Vader In ‘Star Wars: Doctor Aphra’ #27
Guess who’s getting a visit from the doctor? Star Wars: Doctor Aphra #27 brings us barreling right into the next story arc of Alyssa Wong’s run on the comic series. Picking up where the last issue left off, we see that Sana Starros and her team of Aphra associates managed to survive the Spark Eternal’s attempt on their lives and were rescued by Just Lucky and Ariole Yu. Once they’re all awake, they find they’ve been taken to a secret penthouse on Canto Bight owned by none other than Ronen Tagge. Having revived himself after his near-death experience, Ronen offers Sana and her crew a job; to steal the Spark Eternal from his aunt Domina. But, as Ronen leaves them to think over his offer, Just Lucky warns Sana and the others that getting out of debt to Ronen is virtually impossible.
Meanwhile, while still in control of Aphra’s body, we see that the Spark Eternal is having a hard time with her electro-tattoos. As the newly recruited BT-1 and 0-0-0 watch in confusion, Aphra is able to retake control of her body and offers the Spark an ultimatum. The Spark can either give Aphra some control over herself or be slowly destroyed as Aphra uses her hacking abilities to wipe the Spark’s mind. Without any other options, the Spark begrudgingly agrees to Aphra’s terms and returns control of her body to her, only for her to discover that they are flying toward Crimson Dawn’s confrontation with Darth Vader.

Elsewhere, Kho Phon Farrus is still trying to help the Archivist open the Fermata Cage and unleash the Sith spirit inside. Frustrated with Qi’ra’s lack of consideration towards their own wellbeing, Kho leaves for a moment to send a message to Detta Yao. Expressing regret over their decision to help with Crimson Dawn’s plan, Kho tells Detta that they’ll let her know if the plan goes well. Hanging up in anger, Detta returns to the rest of the group as Ronen comes to get Sana’s answer.
At first, Sana rejects his proposal, saying Domina’s forces would surely kill him and her crew. However, when Ronen reveals his allegiance with Crimson Dawn, Sana goes back on her crew’s decision and decides to take Ronen’s job, albeit on one condition; that they also assassinate Domina Tagge.
Doctor Aphra #27 is a decent bridge to the next major storyline in the comic. Aphra regaining control of her body from the Spark Eternal increases the chances of her eventually being freed from the AI as she heads toward a possible reunion with Darth Vader, with whom Aphra has quite the history.
This could potentially mean that Aphra will have some role in Hidden Empire as Vader attempt to destroy Crimson Dawn once and for all. The allusion to a past relationship between Kho and Detta is also interesting and presents another possible motivation for Kho to abandon Crimson Dawn as their plan continues to fall apart. The most exciting development is Sana and her crew attempting to assassinate Domina Tagge on her nephew Ronen’s behalf.
Seeing the Tagge family go head to head against one another will surely lead to a fun confrontation between Sana’s crew and Boussh’s own team, currently employed by Domina. Whichever Tagge ends up as the victor, Domina and Ronen had better hope they’re it.
