What's Next For 'Star Wars' Animation?

Star Wars: The Bad Batch wrapping up its final season marks the end of an era. Up until now, all the content focused, for the most part, on the clones. Starting with Star Wars: The Clone Wars, continuing through Star Wars Rebels, and ending with Star Wars: The Bad Batch, the story would either include or focus on the politics of the clone army.  Voice actor Dee Bradley Baker has portrayed each one, from Rex to every single member of The Bad Batch, spending most of his time talking to himself in a microphone.

The dedicated Lucasfilm Animation Studio in Singapore that made most of these shows is also no more, after closing in August of 2023.  It almost seems like there’s a changing of the guard, with the latest Disney-produced animations, like Tales of the Jedi, and Star Wars: Visions focusing on the Jedi/Sith dynamic. But The Bad Batch Showrunner Brad Rau still thinks that the clones have a place in the future of Star Wars

“I wouldn't call it the end of the Clone Wars universe,” Rau says, “But as the end of the story of this group of clones, yes. There's always hope that there'll be more stories in the future, but just speaking of the Bad Batch, wrapping up our story here with this final season is great. It's a great thing.”

Head writer Jennifer Corbett agrees. “Well, I think when you talk about cloning, that's been a part of the Star Wars story very early on.”

Will we see clones back in Star Wars? We’ll have to wait and see.

The next animated release is Tales of the Empire which is due out on May 4th, but after that, the schedule gets a little sketchy. Star Wars Visions, Season 3 is rumored to be in the works, but there’s nothing concrete from Disney. The Young Jedi Adventures hasn’t been renewed as yet, however, the reception was so good that it would have been a surprise if there hadn’t been an announcement at Star Wars Celebration. But with Disney focusing on feature films, it's unlikely we’ll get any new shows to replace Star Wars: The Bad Batch in a very long time.
