The Witcher is officially coming to an end after Netflix announced that season five will be the last time they renew the show. Season four is currently in production with Liam Hemsworth replacing Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia. We’ve yet to see Liam Hemsworth in the white wig and leathers, however, the production did release a picture of the table read which also includes Anya Chalotra and Freya Allan.

There are three computer games and eight books written by Andrzej Sapkowski that are the basis for Geralt’s adventures. Season two and season three veer further and further away from these stories, adding in hunts for Ciri that didn’t previously exist, as well as a brand-new plot at the Thanned ball. According to former producer Beau De Mayo, some of the writers on the show disliked the source material, and it’s been theorized that this led to superfan Cavill’s exit.

Without the influence of Cavill to keep the writers on any kind of straight and narrow, how will seasons four and five shape up?

Netflix has saved shows from the brink before. Castlevania earned itself a spin-off, and Sense8 received a two-parter after interventions from fans. But viewership of The Witcher dropped 36% between season two and three, and a massive 48% from its lauded debut. Unless Hemsworth can pull something remarkable out of the bag, it's curtains for The White Wolf.
