Japanese animation studio MAPPA has officially cancelled the production of Yuri!!! on Ice the movie: ICE ADOLESCENCE. This notice, posted to the anime’s official X account, comes just shy of seven years after the project’s initial announcement of development. In the notice, the studio thanked fans for supporting the project and the fandom itself before explaining that they “[had] come to the decision to unfortunately cancel its production” and apologizing for it. They describe the reason for canceling as “due to various circumstances,” not going into further detail at this time.

The anime movie has faced some roadblocks since its initial confirmation announcement in 2017. Communication about the progress of the film’s production had been limited; a few social media posts including a soundtrack recording update popped up in 2018, and the title was released midway through the same year. After this confirmation, the first release delay was announced. At the end of 2020, a new short trailer was released. The plot was never officially confirmed, but this trailer implied that the film would show the early days of Victor Nikiforov’s career in some capacity.
