Crazy Rich Asians is the latest Hollywood movie to make the move onto Broadway. The romantic comedy, based on the bestselling novel by Kevin Kwan, is being adapted into a musical for the stage. Sitting in the director’s chair for the exciting project is none other than its original showrunner, Jon M. Chu.

This might seem like an odd choice, as this massive undertaking will be his first experience in theatre on that otherwise impressive resumé. However, Jon M. Chu has worked on pop biopics, as well as movies with singing and dancing numbers, these include the Step Up franchise, Justin Bieber: Never Say Never, and the upcoming Wicked: Part 1. With his extensive knowledge of the source material, the right team around him could make this a smash.

Excitingly, the lyricists signed up for Crazy Rich Asians are Amanda Green and Tat Tong, Tong is a record producer and songwriter who has collaborated with top artists like Pitbull and Santana. Amanda Green worked on the Jonthan Larson musical Tick,Tick…Boom, and also received a Tony nomination in 2022 for Mr Saturday Night. The score will be written by Helen Park who is the flavor of the month on Broadway, fresh off her 2023 Tony nomination for KPOP.

Adapting a movie for the stage can be a massive hit, or an expensive miss. Dirty Dancing, The Lion King, and Harry Potter and the Cursed Child are the exception rather than the rule. For every Legally Blonde, there’s a Carrie, Spider-Man Turn off the Dark, or Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, that flopped.

So, let's see if the laughs and endearing appeal of Crazy Rich Asians can be brought to the stage. Break a leg, Jon M. Chu.
