The British Broadcasting Corporation was founded on October 18, 1922. As October 2022 approaches, it’s long been known that Doctor Who would be producing a special to partake in the celebration, ending up as Jodie Whittaker’s last as the Thirteenth Doctor. However, while we still don’t know exactly when it will air next month, we do finally have a title.

Doctor Who Magazine issue 582 reveals that the episode is titled “The Power of the Doctor”. This is a title that evokes the “The X of the Y” format the show very frequently uses. It is also reminiscent of episodes like the missing first adventure of the Second Doctor “The Power of the Daleks”, and episodes that ended the Eleventh Doctor’s tenure “The Name of the Doctor”, “The Day of the Doctor”, and “The Time of the Doctor”, as well as the short “The Night of the Doctor”. It refers to not only what the Doctor can do for others, what their presence does for others, but presumably the ability to regenerate, as Thirteen will into Ncuti Gatwa’s Fourteenth Doctor during this episode. The series 12 episode “The Timeless Children” revealed that such ability was spliced from The Doctor into Gallifreyans by Tecteun, creating the Time Lord race.

“The Power of the Doctor” is set to see the returns of classic companions Tegan and Ace, played by Janet Fielding and Sophie Aldred respectively, as well as characters introduced who have returned during the Thirteenth Doctor era but haven’t appeared since at least the year’s specials began. It is also looking as if Gatwa’s tenure will begin with several specials for the show’s 60th anniversary before his first series.
