WARNING: SPOILER ALERTS FOR THE BAD BATCH EPISODES 1 & 2

After a dramatic first season, Season 2 of The Bad Batch returns with a thrilling two-episode season premiere. The series of delays with the release date turns out to be well worth it with the return of Hunter, Wrecker, Echo, Tech, and Omega.

The premiere starts out with the clones escaping a precarious situation, the likes of which they seem to typically find themselves in, just trying to make some money and survive in the galaxy as the Empire continues to flex its authority. The promise of a massive payout and a life free of the Empire’s designs spurs the clones to take on a heist on an Imperial-held world, Count Dooku’s homeworld of Serenno. Like all heists, things do not go according to plan, and by the end of Episode 2, Vice Admiral Rampart knows the clones survived the destruction of Kamino, but he is keen on keeping that to himself, no matter what.

The unique, brushed painting art style of the animation is as gorgeous and smooth as ever. While the episode is fun to watch and exciting, it gives away little about the trajectory of the season. When Rampart kills Captain Wilco to keep the knowledge of Clone Force 99’s survival of Kamino, it suggests at least part of the season will be him trying to clean up his mess. Given his use of Crosshair to do just that in the past, that will likely be the route the show pursues to bring him back in.

The premiere does a great job of continuing to flesh out the transitionary years from the end of the Clone Wars and the Empire’s reign. Cid ominously lays out that their continued prospects as mercenaries are growing precariously thin as the Empire continues to solidify its strength, hence the juicy opportunity on Serenno. Omega’s bond with the boys continues to grow as she is now an active member of the group’s missions. She still has more to learn, shown through a typical hard lesson example that was reminiscent of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.

While it does not move the story along that much, the two episodes are not short on the action and excitement that fits in well with a growing tension that matches the pace with the increasing threat of the Empire’s grasp on the galaxy.

Episodes 1 and 2 are available to stream now on Disney+.
