The Legend Of Vox Machina Season 2 Episodes 4-6 Review
WARNING: SPOILERS FOR THE LEGEND OF VOX MACHINA SEASON 2 EPISODES 1- 6
Season 2 of The Legend of Vox Machina premiered last Thursday on Amazon Prime. The three-episode premiere started off strong and introduced us to the terrifying group of dragons known as the Chroma Conclave. The next three episodes, which were released this past Thursday, showed us the journey that Vox Machina is taking to retrieve the weapons, known as Vestiges of Divergence, to fight the Chromas Conclave.
Episode 4 began with a flashback of Vex and Vax. They were running from some bandits and encountered a severely wounded bear. Vex decided to keep the cub, who we would come to know as Trinket. We then returned to the present with Vax clutching his dead sister's body. Kash tried a spell to bring her back, but it did not work due to their being inside the temple of the Matron of Ravens. Torn up about his sister’s death, Vax made a deal with the goddess of death to “take him instead.” Vex returned to life and Vax came in possession of the first Vestige in the form of a black armor. Vax used his newfound powers as the Matron of Ravens’ new champion to fight the monster.

The next episode followed with another flashback, this time taking a look at Keyleth. The beautiful scene showed her mother leaving and also hinted at Keyleth’s powers. When we returned to the present, Scanlan observed that the volcano close by looked angry. Keyleth deduced that something was wrong and rushed to the nearby village of Pyrah, the home of the Fire Ashari. There, she reunited with her father and their allies, Lady Kima (voiced by Stephanie Beatriz) and Allura (voiced by Indira Varma). However, the heartfelt moment was short-lived as Vox Machina had to close the rift to the Fire Plane lest the creatures escape through and destroy the village.
At first, it seemed as if the group was failing to close the rift, but Keyleth heard her mother’s voice telling her that she “was made to pass through fire.” Keyleth passed through the flames and succeeded in closing the rift. As she succeeded in mastering the fire element, Keyleth officially passed this portion of her trial or Aramenté. Out of the three episodes, this was my personal favorite as it was wonderful to see Keyleth start to come into her own powers, and become more confident in her skills as a druid.
The final episode of this week dropped us on Grog slaughtering his friends in a bloody fight. However, it was just a dream. The group made it to Rimeclaft where they were to find the sphinx Kamaljiori who would be able to tell them about the next location of the Vestiges. The group encountered the sphinx in an old temple who challenged them to wound him. This sounded easy at first except that sphinx had never felt pain before. Scanlan ended up being the last one left standing and used his bard talents to play a song that wounded the sphinx’s heart, causing him emotional pain. The entire animation sequence and accompanying music were incredible, and could double as a music video. Scanlan received a sword named Mythcarver, and Kamaljiori showed the location of the other Vestiges.
Unfortunately, the dragon Umbrasyl ambushed the group and tried to take the sword. The sphinx sacrificed himself to save Scanlan. Grog’s worst nightmare came through when the bloodlust caused by his sword caused him to unwittingly stab Pike. Keyleth transported the group to get away right as the dragon was attacking them. However, things did not go as planned as Vox Machina appeared to be separated in an unknown place.
These episodes were a great continuation of the premiere, and fans of the campaign will be thrilled to see how strong this season is so far. The music, especially Scanlan’s songs, was excellent. This series proves that animation is not just for kids and that Dungeons and Dragons can be a successful entertainment medium. Vox Machina sure has a journey ahead of them, and it is definitely exciting to watch each week.
New episodes of The Legend of Vox Machina season 2 drop every Friday on Amazon Prime.
