The first show set in the High Republic is finally here. The Acolyte is the newest live-action Star Wars series that ushers a new era onscreen. We were treated to two episodes, “Lost/Found” & “Revenge/Justice” for the premiere, and they were worth the wait. The show is colorful and exciting and does a wonderful job of honoring everything that came before it.

There’s an assassin on the loose, who is killing Jedi, well, four specific Jedi to be exact. After one of their own turns up dead, the Jedi investigate. Here we are introduced to Jedi Master Sol (Lee Jung-jae), Jedi Knight Yord Fandar (Charlie Barnett), and Padawan Jecki Lon (Dafne Keen). We also meet Osha (Amandla Stenberg), who unfortunately gets roped into their investigation, after being accused of the crime. All of these characters are extremely likable, and I enjoyed every moment they were on my screen. It turns out, she has a twin sister, Mae (Amandla Stenberg) who is the one to blame for these murders. She is being controlled by a mysterious Sith-like entity, who we see briefly at the end of episode 1. We don’t learn much more about this Sith either, even though Master Sol tries his best to uncover who he is.  High Republic book fans also get their first sighting of Vernestra Rwoh (Rebecca Henderson). These episodes were interesting, especially the dynamic, and the backstory, between Mae and Osha. I am fully invested in these characters, and I am intrigued to see where their story ends up going.

While everyone in the show is amazing, the standout for me was Amandla Stenberg. They have to play two characters in the show, which is not an easy task, and she did a phenomenal job playing two very different characters. Another standout for me is Jedi Master Sol, played by Lee Jung-Jae. Even just after two episodes, he's easily become one of my favorite Jedi and perfectly embodies what a Jedi should be. His character reminds me a lot of Qui Gon Jinn, and that’s a good thing. He learned English for this part which is a huge accomplishment, and it just proves how big the global impact of Star Wars is. The entire cast is very diverse, which is wonderful to see in a Star Wars project.

The High Republic is a different era of Star Wars than we’re used to. The books are all incredible, and it’s interesting to see what happened before the Skywalker saga took place. Getting to see it translated on screen is amazing, especially when it comes to the clothes. The High Republic Jedi robes are so colorful and elegant, that they may be my favorite when it comes to a Jedi uniform. Mae’s outfit however may be my favorite in the show. It looks like it was pieced together with different fabrics and elements she had at her disposal. The purple robe is really what brings it all together, and makes her quite menacing.

As always, the music is incredible and does a great job of setting up every scene. Even though we didn’t get any cool lightsaber fights in these first two episodes, I know we are in for a treat when we finally do. The first two episodes left me with many questions, that I hope we get answers to as the season continues. This show was worth the wait, and I am excited to see what happens next.

Rating: 8/10
