'Zen: Grogu And Dust Bunnies' Is The Grogu/Studio Ghibli Crossover We Didn't Know We Needed

The surprise collaboration between Lucasfilm and Studio Ghibli has arrived in the form of Zen - Grogu and Dust Bunnies. This three-minute short sees Grogu of The Mandalorian fame interact with the soot sprites of My Neighbour Totoro and Spirited Away in a beautiful hand-drawn fashion.

It is those visuals that take centre stage across this entire short, with the opening giving a visual delight in how smooth it sweeps around to Grogu while leaves fly around him. There’s a second part that’s just as impressive in how it manages such stunning movement. It is a very back-to-basics style of animation, utilising a sand-brown paper background, but one that is very professionally handled.

For something that’s labelled as zen, it does manage that feeling with its art-style. With no dialogue to speak of and not even any sounds, the music is allowed to convey all the emotion going on during the short. Starting off calm, it then gets louder and more intense – though still with that same zen feeling – as the dust bunnies appear and start causing trouble.

For as short as it is, it’s well worth a watch to appreciate the visual style utilised here. It does give one a wish for something bigger when it comes to such a collaboration, and perhaps we might get it with Star Wars: Visions one day. For fans of Grogu who want to pick up his latest adventures, The Mandalorian Season 3 is expected to arrive February 2023.
