'Percy Jackson And The Olympians' Episode 5 Spoiler-Free Review
Gods, Love, And Infidelity? Not only do these make up a great Greek myth, but they are also present in this week's episode of Percy Jackson And The Olympians, appropriately titled ‘A God Buys Us Cheeseburgers’.
After blowing up the St. Louis arch and an Amtrak train last episode, the trio is in hot water. The feds are after them, so trying to use public transportation to get to their destination is out of the question. They decide to walk, until they meet the God of War himself, Ares. He is not a nice God, but decides to help our heroes, in exchange for their help. Ares tasks Annabeth and Percy to head to the local amusement to retrieve his missing shield. The two head out, and find out that this is no ordinary amusement park, as it was built by Hephestus.

If you’re familiar with Greek mythology, or even the books, then you will know that Aphrodite and Ares are a thing, even though she is married to Hephestus. He built this park to monitor the two of them. We eventually get the famous Tunnel of Love scene, with some changes from the book. Without spoiling it, these changes made the scene more exciting and raised the stakes as well. Oh, and a surprise God appears, which was cool. After completing their task, Ares gives them transportation, where they will be making their way to the Lotus Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.
This episode showed us the bond between Percy and Annabeth growing. If you’re familiar with the books, you know that the two characters eventually become a couple, but it took a lot to get there. We were treated to an emotional moment between the two of them during the Tunnel of Love scene. This has easily become one of my favorite scenes, and Walker and Leah shined during it. It was a great deviation from what happened in the book. Their relationship is starting to feel like what fans are familiar with. Annabeth finally uttered two important words, that fans have been waiting for since the first episode.
Walker, Leah, and Aryan have all done an incredible job of embodying these characters, and in each episode, they get better and better. Adam Copeland as Ares was an incredible casting choice. He was mean and terrifying, but weirdly likable, which is not something you would normally say about the God of War. While he’s not a good guy, he does keep his promise to help the trio. It was also cute to see him and Grover chatting, something we didn’t get to see in the books. Without giving away too much, we did get to see another God, that doesn’t make an appearance until one of the later books. Their appearance was appropriate and a wonderful addition to an already incredible episode. The casting for that God was also an excellent choice. There’s been a lack of Olympians throughout the season so far, but as the season wraps up, we’ll be seeing more of them helping, and sometimes hindering, the trio on their journey.
Percy, Annabeth, and Grover still have a long way to go until they get to the Underworld in Los Angeles, and as demigods, nothing is ever easy for them. Next week’s episode brings us to the fabulous Lotus Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, where nothing is as it seems.
