‘Criminal Minds: Evolution’ Episode 6 Spoiler-Free Review
Contains Spoilers for episodes 1-5!
The BAU is finally back after an almost month-long mid-season break. The last time we saw the BAU, all hell was breaking loose! Garcia and Tyler were working together to find Sicarius, and the BAU were chasing an Unsub with ties to the Senate, making their uphill battle much more difficult. While the majority of the episode felt like a classic Criminal Minds episode and spent very little time focusing on the serial killer network, that all changed in the final moments of the episode. We learned that the Senator’s son who was the Unsub for the episode was actually Sicarius’ mysterious benefactor whom he had been talking with on the phone throughout the first four episodes. As if that wasn’t twisty enough, we had to watch as a bomb went off while JJ and Luke were still inside one of the storage containers leaving us to wonder if they would both survive.
This week’s episode picked up right where episode 5 left off. We are taken to the scene and can hear someone breathing as the BAU scrambles back at Quantico to get their body cameras back online. Thankfully we quickly see who is okay and the team FINALLY gets their jet back! Wheels up everyone! While the early moments of the episode focus on checking on JJ and Luke, it quickly moves on to focus on Sicarius.

For the BAU and audiences, Sicarius is still an enigma. We know that he lives in Seattle, has a wife and two daughters, and is slowly losing control of his urges, but as far as his past, we are completely in the dark. This episode changes all of that. Rather than focusing on new cases which the last few episodes have done this week, it is back to focusing solely on the serial killer network and how it operates. While the BAU is struggling to understand the clues they found in what was left of the storage container, audiences are taken on a journey through Sicarius’ past. In episode four, fans were introduced to a new character, an older man, that was scolding Sicarius as he cleaned up after a kill. We finally know who that person was and what role they played in the creation of Sicarius. It was interesting doing a deep dive into Sicarius’ past to see how he learned to kill and why he has such strict rules that he makes his network follow.
Thanks to Garcia, the team is finally able to not only connect all of Sicarius’ victims but they are also able to start to build a real profile of who he is and what his motivations are. They discover more bodies and begin to realize that some of the older bodies were not Sicarius’ like they had previously believed.
While this week’s episode was pretty dark, we did get more internal drama within the BAU and their personal lives than we typically get in the new show! Tara is faced with difficult choices involving her current relationship which in my opinion proves how terrible her girlfriend is, and Garcia gets a love interest! In the original show, Garcia was slept on for so much of it, and in the new show, it’s the opposite. She is just as much a star as the rest of the cast, and it is amazing! She also breaks the case wide open leading the team to their first tangible lead all season!
Overall, I really enjoyed this episode because it finally gave us some background on Sicarius making him feel more like an Unsub that is catchable as opposed to an enigma that is always ten steps ahead. It was also nice to finally see the team’s hard work paying off. I can’t wait to see how the season ends and what the plan is for season two! Will they catch Sicarius and have a new focus on season two? Or will he elude them long enough to become the new season’s villain, too?
