James Gunn States ‘GOTG 3’ Is Not What Fans Expect
Back in 2014, Marvel unleashed Guardians of the Galaxy upon the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Written and directed by James Gunn, the MCU started to head in a new direction with this chapter. Guardians of the Galaxy was a Marvel Cinematic Universe film, and so much more.
Guardians of the Galaxy was one of those surprise films that took the world by storm. Outside of avid comic book readers, the Guardians of the Galaxy could be considered one of Marvel’s “B team.” James Gunn’s vision for the team certainly put them on the word stage. We had no idea what was coming but we sure knew what had arrived when the film premiered.

James Gunn is not one for making his plans public when he is making a film. Very little was known about Guardians of the Galaxy 2 before it was released, and there were certainly a few little surprises waiting for the audience in that one. Gunn is not afraid of making interesting plot decisions that might not sit well with the audience. Having found his feet in the Troma world with Tromeo and Juliet, it is really no surprise that he likes to keep the audience guessing. Guardians of the Galaxy 3 appears to be no exception to that rule. Expect the unexpected seems to be the order of the day. James Gunn recently did an interview with Collider where he made a statement about the filming of Guardians of the Galaxy 3, and mentioned in passing what fans might expect (or not):
"I think that I'm really happy. I gave a bunch of scenes to Marvel right before Christmas break. Kevin [Feige] went... They were all really, really, really stoked. But also, it's not going to be the movie people... It's different than what people are going to expect. It's a hard road, but I'm really happy with it so far."
Once again, James Gunn is tight lipped about any plot details for Guardians of the Galaxy 3, but we do at least know that filming is now well under way. Guardians of the Galaxy 3 is currently penned for a 2023 release date and James Gunn has already suggested that we may not even see a trailer for the film this year. Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel, Dave Bautista, Pom Klementieff, and Karen Gillan are all expected to return. In addition, we will see Will Poulter joining the cast as the much anticipated Adam Warlock, and Chukwudi Iwuji will be taken on an, as of yet, unknown role.
While the Guardians of the Galaxy films fit well within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, they bring their own brand of chaos and unpredictability with them. They are also always both a visual and audio adventure that sets them apart from other Marvel Cinematic Universe films. James Gunn has a wonderful ability to tie in a soundtrack to the film, and his use of classic songs for both films really elevates them. I am sure that Guardians of the Galaxy 3 will also have an amazing soundtrack to accompany it.
So now we have to wait and find out exactly what James Gunn means when he suggests that Guardians of the Galaxy 3 is not what fans are expecting. Will the tone change? Might this be a much darker film than the previous two? Is James Gunn going to take another bold move and kill off more characters? There will be much speculation over the next year or so, but I have no doubt that James Gunn will deliver the goods once again. Guardians of the Galaxy 3 will be another high point in Marvel Cinematic Universe films and the Guardians of the Galaxy series.
In the meantime we do have the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special to look forward to that will be released on Disney+ in December 2022.
