Why The Mandalorian Had No Idea The Force Existed

As The Mandalorian heads into season 3, you might be wondering why Din Djarin is not familiar with the Jedi and the way of the Force. I mean who does not know about the Force, and that the Jedi are followers of the Force who use it to fight against the evil Sith Lord Darth Vader. It is interesting that a Star Wars film or series would have a character that is unaware of the Force and its powers in the time after Return of the Jedi. Well, let’s look at this for a moment to understand why Din Djarin might not have been aware of Grogu’s mysterious powers. After all, if it weren’t for Grogu and the Force, Din Djarin would not be alive. Din Djarin was pretty much doomed when he was trying to get the mudhorn’s egg in “Chapter 2: The Child.” If it were not for Grogu’s timely use of the Force, Djarin’s life would have ended back in the second episode of The Mandalorian Season 1.

So why didn’t Mando know about the Force and the Jedi? Well, there is a simple answer. Djarin was only a child during the Clone Wars. The circumstances surrounding his becoming a Mandalorian foundling were also very violent and traumatic. Thus, his memory from this time would be very blurred. Furthermore, even prior to Order 66, the Jedi were a rare group of people to start. They comprised about 10,000 members, which was not a large number when compared to the rest of the citizens of the galaxy. The Jedi were basically a very small of the galaxy at large. After the Clone Wars and Order 66, almost all Force users were destroyed. There were a few cunning survivors, but for the most part, the Empire was able to erase any and all trace that the Jedi ever existed.

Even though the Mandalorian armor was originally developed by the Mandalorian to protect them from the Jedi’s lightsaber strikes during the Mandalorian-Jedi War, this happened over 4,000 years ago. Djarin was also a foundling, adopted into the culture. Perhaps he never really connected with the Mandalorian culture like those who were born on the planet of Mandalore.

On the flip side, if he were not familiar with the Force or the Jedi, then why did Djarin use the phrase “May the Force be with you” in The Mandalorian Season 2 “Chapter 10: The Passenger”? Perhaps the phrase was just a general term of endearment or wishing good luck. One did not really need to know where it came from other than it was a saying used around the galaxy.

As the series progresses, and Din Djarin and Grogu grew closer, Djarin realized that he must get Grogu to his own kind. While Mando may be unaware of the impact Grogu may have on the galaxy, he was determined to return Grogu with his own kind. He had accomplished that mission in the Season 2 finale. The Mandalorian Season 3 is set to premiere soon and Grogu has reunited with Djarin after having learned more about his Jedi powers. It will be interesting to see where this leads. How will Din Djarin act as he learns more about the Force and how it may have impacted his life? After all, he has taken on more responsibility and skill in obtaining the Darksaber. We will have to wait and see what is to come. All of this is really interesting and gives us all the more reason to learn more and fill in the gaps in the Star Wars lore.
