Will Bo-Katan Be The New Antagonist Of 'The Mandalorian?'
The season 2 finale of Star Wars: The Mandalorian left many questions yet to be answered. One of the biggest questions that it left is, what will happen to Bo-Katan in season 3?
WARNING: Spoilers to season 2 of The Mandalorian coming up!
One of the best character reveals in the second season of The Mandalorian was none other than Star Wars: The Clone Wars character Bo-Katan. She was introduced in "Chapter 11: The Heiress," where she and the Night Owls help Mando and Grogu (The Child) with their mission to find one of the last remaining Jedi. In the same episode, we learned that she’s after Moff Gideon and the Darksaber.
The last time Bo-Katan held the Darksaber was in Star Wars Rebels, but it seems that she lost it to Moff Gideon, perhaps sometime after Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi. The Darksaber is a very important part for the Mandalorian culture, as it is said that whoever wields it shall rule all of Mandalore. Being of royalty, it is Bo-Katan’s mission to retrieve the Darksaber from Moff Gideon and rule Mandalore again.
Her character was seen again during the The Mandalorian season 2 finale. Bo-Katan and the Night Owls help Mando and his crew rescue Grogu from the hands of Moff Gideon. She tells Mando to leave the Moff to her, hinting that she wanted to deal with him herself. Yet complications presented during Mando’s confrontation with Moff Gideon result in Mando defeating the Moff and winning the Darksaber from him.
After rescuing Grogu and bringing Moff Gideon before Marshal Cara Dune, Mando tries giving the Darksaber to Bo-Katan, but Moff Gideon explains to him that she cannot accept it. According to Moff Gideon, the Darksaber has to be earned in combat, and it cannot just be given away, which means Bo-Katan has to defeat Mando in order to obtain the saber.
After this conversation, the crew are attacked by Moff Gideon’s Dark Troopers, and are saved by none other than Master Luke Skywalker himself. The episode ends with Luke taking Grogu from Mando, taking him to safety, and to be trained as a Jedi.
We don’t know what is yet to come in season 3 of The Mandalorian, yet many fans speculate that Bo-Katan will be one of the main antagonists for season 3, as she still has to fight Mando for the Darksaber, which, judging by her look in the season finale, seems plausible. Some fans also argue about why she couldn’t just take the Darksaber, when she did that in Star Wars Rebels, where Sabine Wren gave the weapon to her without any problems.
It is not explicitly clarified why she was able to accept the Darkaaber from Sabine in Rebels, and yet not able to accept it from Mando in The Mandalorian season 2. Some fans also believe that it will be Mando himself who will rule Mandalore, and that it will be Bo-Katan who gives the throne of Mandalore to Din Djarin himself. Yet many of the fans believe that it will be Bo-Katan who will be hunting Mando, and that she will fight him to the death for the Darksaber.
Whether it is Mando ruling Mandalore via Bo-Katan handing her right to rule over to him, or them both going on a massive battle over the Darksaber, there is no denying that The Mandalorian season 3 will bring more new surprises to the Star Wars community, and may answer many questions about the mysterious Darksaber.
