Why SAG-AFTRA Encourages Work On Interim Agreement Projects

As the acting guild known as SAG-AFTRA continues to strike for better working rights with the AMPTP, more and more major Hollywood productions are being delayed. One such example includes Dune: Part Two being pushed back to release in 2024, since none of the SAG-AFTRA actors can promote the film (doing so would be crossing the picket line). After all, if they're not being paid properly for their work, why advertise it?
Aside from refusing to promote these productions, members will also refuse to work with struck companies on any major picture, since they often choose to not agree to the guild's negotiations. Fortunately for the actors, finding work in these trying times is not impossible. This is where "The Interim Agreement" comes into play.

The Interim Agreement allows SAG-AFTRA members to work with independent producers, so long as they follow the terms outlined from previous efforts to negotiate with the AMPTP, which unfortunately have fallen on many executives' deaf ears. This release comes just in time for the upcoming movie festivals, as producers can still have acting talent for their upcoming films. This also allows guild members to work on these interim films and help promote them. While some may be confused as to how working while on strike will help their efforts, SAG-AFTRA's national executive director and chief negotiator, Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, explains how working with independent producers can show solidarity:
"The Interim Agreement is a vital part of our strategic approach and was created for several reasons, all of which are aimed at protecting the interests of our members. The Agreement demonstrates to the AMPTP and the struck companies that independent producers at all budget levels are eager, keen, and able to work with our members under these terms. We encourage SAG-AFTRA members to audition for and appear in projects that have been approved for an Interim Agreement, and applaud them for promoting their work in these productions,” Duncan-Ireland explained in a statement.
While it may be difficult to wait even longer for a highly anticipated film to release, cinema fans can show support to SAG-AFTRA members by watching and supporting films that follow The Interim Agreement when they are released. Maybe then the AMPTP will understand the necessity of solidarity with the picket line.
