Why Can The Beskar Spear Penetrate Mandalorian Armor? | 'Star Wars' Explained
One of the big additions to the lore of Star Wars is the special metal that is only found on Mandalore and forged by Mandalorians into armor to be worn by Mandalorians. This is of course the mythical metal known simply as beskar.
Beskar is the metal of the Mandalorian. Quite literally. It is a special type of material that is resistant against lightsabers. Nothing can penetrate it, nothing can destroy it. This is why Mandalorians have become quite a unique group within the Star Wars universe, being one of the great rivals of the Force-wielders of the galaxy. Nothing can penetrate their treasured beskar. Except for other beskar of course. For sometimes only metal can break metal. Or in this case, only beskar can break beskar.

As stated earlier, beskar is the material that makes Mandalorian armor. All Mandalorian armor is made of beskar. It is traditional, and it’s really useful. It deflects blasters real easy, which helps when being attacked from various enemies, be it Republic, Imperial or other forces. Since a lot of Mandalorians become bounty hunters, they are no stranger to escaping blaster fire.
Mandalorian armor, from the beginning, has always fascinated the Star Wars fandom. After all, one of the reasons Boba Fett, as a character, captured the imaginations of millions of kids during the 80s was because of his design. Questions were asked as to why and how it was made and what it does. One always wondered just what he was and why he wore that particular design. Of course, back then, the lore and details behind it were never fully fleshed out.
Now, in terms of it existing in the lore, beskar is a recent addition to Star Wars. While Mandalorians themselves go all the way back to West End Game material and sourcebooks explaining who and what Boba Fett was. Beskar, as a term, was not introduced until Mandalorian Season 1. Thus, now we have learned exactly what type of armor Boba was wearing during Empire Strikes Back. This of course comes back during Mando Season 2 when he reappears.
The beksar is something that is forged, it can be turned into armor, weapons, and chainmail. However as a weapon it is quite dangerous. For a weapon of beskar can damage beskar. It shows just the sheer power of this metal. That even a lightsaber, considered by many in the galaxy to be one of the most powerful weapons ever, can't penetrate it, but beskar can penetrate itself. Hence a weapon of beskar, like a spear, could be a dangerous thing for a Mandalorian. A spear that could penetrate the armor would be one of the most dangerous weapons of all.
It’s why in the fifth episode of Book of Boba Fett, the Armorer melted it down, sensing the danger in anything that could damage beskar. It would be safer in the long run. To not have a weapon running around the galaxy like that, especially when Mandalorian numbers are so very low at the moment. Perhaps ridding themselves of beskar weapons is crucial for Mandalorians at the moment. It would be important to rid themselves of any threats, to ensure their survival.
The galaxy far, far away continues to expand and that means new lore, new materials, new ways of expanding on the ways of the Mandalorian. It will be interesting to see the intricacies not just of their society but also their armors, their metals, as well as their people. The galaxy is continuing to expand. Hopefully it will be forged into a truly expanded universe for all Star Wars fans to enjoy.
