What We Know About The Upcoming She-Hulk Series

Jennifer Walters will be portraying She-Hulk in the upcoming Disney+ series

Marvel Studios groups all of its Marvel Cinematic Universe properties into phases to distinguish them from each other. Phase Four is now well underway with quite a lot of content delivered already and still plenty more to come over the next few years. On the movie front Marvel Studios has already given us Black Widow, Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings, Eternals and Spider-Man: No Way Home. The slate continues with Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness, Thor: Love And Thunder and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever lined up for later in 2022.

On the television front, Marvel Studios has been really spoiling us with WandaVision, The Falcon And The Winter Solder, Loki, What If…?, Hawkeye and Moon Knight already switching things up and expanding characters and themes within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Ms. Marvel is due to drop in June and next we have the much anticipated She-Hulk series lurking on the horizon. There is not enough love for the big green heroes in live-action so hopefully this should rectify that, in the absence of another Hulk movie.

She-Hulk follows Jennifer Walters, a lawyer who specializes in superhuman-oriented legal cases. She-Hulk will welcome a host of Marvel characters to the series. The series was first announced way back in August 2019 at the Disney D23 conference and was confirmed as being part of the shared universe of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Jessica Gao was subsequently named as the head writer in November 2019.

Marvel Studios President, Kevin Feige, gave an update in February 2021 that confirmed that the show will run for ten episodes and is not a limited series, like WandaVision, and so is likely to also have additional seasons, along with Loki and Moon Knight. Despite having more episodes than most other Marvel Studios streaming series it had been revealed that She-Hulk episodes will have a shorter running time than other shows. Kevin Feige has described the upcoming She-Hulk series as a "half-hour legal comedy”. It was also confirmed by Kevin Feige that Jennifer Walters/She-Hulk will cross over into other Marvel Cinematic Universe movies in the future and that the show will stick closely to the John Byrne version of She-Hulk that was released by Marvel Comics.

Casting announcements were somewhat confusing but Kevin Feige did eventually officially confirm that Tatiana Maslany had been cast in the lead role as Jennifer Walters/She-Hulk, despite her apparent denial of this when Deadline Hollywood broke the news in September 2020. When asked about her casting in an interview, prior to Kevin Feige’s confirmation, Tatiana Maslany responded, “That actually isn’t a real thing and it’s like a press release that’s gotten out of hand. It’s totally not — I’ve been connected to these things in the past and press has gotten onto it, but it’s not actually a thing, unfortunately.” Kevin Feige also revealed the bonus news that Mark Ruffalo would be appearing in the show, reprising his role as Bruce Banner/Hulk alongside Tim Roth who would once again be portraying Emil Blonsky/Abomination. Tim Roth had originally appeared in The Incredible Hulk movie as well as Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings. We also know that Jameela Jamil will play a rival of She-Hulk named Titania, who also has incredible strength.

Filming for the She-Hulk show official wrapped up in August 2021. Marvel Studios, as usual, are keeping their cards close to their chest regarding any real details on the show, but they did drop a teaser with some footage as part of Disney+ Day on 12th November 2021. The teaser ended wonderfully with Jennifer Walters dropping the immortal catchphrase from the original 1970s Incredible Hulk series, "Don't make me angry; you wouldn't like me when I'm angry.”

Interestingly the She-Hulk logo has also seen a bit of an evolution since it was first announced. The original logo looked like this:

Original art style 'She-Hulk' logo

The new logo is now stylized as She/Hulk, although it should be noted that Marvel are currently still referring to her as She-Hulk.

Updated art style 'She/Hulk' logo

Fans of the big green side of things have many reasons to be excited for the upcoming She-Hulk show. Not only do we have the promise of more than one season, plus a crossover into Marvel Cinematic Universe movies, but we also have the return of Mark Ruffalo to ride alongside She-Hulk. The future is bright, the future is green!
