What Dooku Thought The Plan For Him Was
Count Dooku aka Darth Tyranus was the second and last apprentice of Darth Sidious before he would gain his ultimate apprentice in Darth Vader. However, that did not mean that Count Dooku wasn’t unaware of the grand plan to destroy the Jedi once and for all and finally bring an end to the Republic that would be replaced with an Empire once and for all. Though his views on the matter were slightly different from his master in one possible way. Count Dooku thought he was going to live to see all of this come to pass. Instead, he got his head chopped off, and the rest is history.
This is very much a quite in-depth plan that is sadly never fleshed out in the Revenge of the Sith movie. For all we know, it is never clear just what Dooku thinks his role in Palpatine’s plan is. Does he think the Separatists are supposed to win? Does he know that Palpatine and Sidious are the same person?

Based on the 2008 show The Clone Wars, we do know that he is aware of the Clone army being connected to the Sith, which is something that was stated in Attack of the Clones. However, what his actual endgame is remains a mystery within the film. The Count’s actual thoughts are a bit more complicated than that, and are expanded upon in the now Legends version of the Revenge of the Sith novelization. Written by Matthew Stover, the book goes into details about various characters, one of which is, of course, Count Dooku during the Battle of Coruscant. We see his inner thoughts as the culmination of Palpatine’s plans is starting to finally come to fruition, the last great act before the final plunge against the Jedi order.
Dooku is believed to still play a role in Palpatine’s upcoming new Order. He sees what he and the Sith are doing as a necessary evil to finally bring peace and order to the galaxy after years of corruption in both the Republic and the Jedi.
The plan was simple enough. Once Anakin and Obi-Wan confronted him, he would take out Obi-Wan and begin to turn Anakin to the Dark Side. Once that was done, he would surrender himself to the Republic, blaming all the misdeeds of the war and the Separatists on General Grievous, who'd be framed as the main villain of the war. Meanwhile, with Anakin on their side, Palpatine would begin to ensure that the Jedi are perceived as traitors of the Republic and thus eliminate them via Order 66. With the Jedi gone, Dooku, now in a new role as Elder Statesmen along with Palpatine and Anakin, would form a new order. Anakin being considered as a general for a new army of Dark Side would make the new regime secure. The plan also includes an element of human centrism to it, since Dooku in the book at least thinks only humans can run the galaxy.
If it sounds a bit far-fetched, and that is probably because it was meant to be. However, Palpatine didn’t need to worry about all these intricate details panning out. Count Dooku was nothing more than a pawn. He was never going to be anything more or anything less. Just a mere figurehead to lead the opposition against the Republic while Palpatine consolidated power from within. While Dooku might have taken his time as a Sith seriously, Palpatine never did.
It is interesting, though, to think of a world where Dooku was part of the New Order and the Rule of Two was essentially broken. However, the Sith are filled with contradictions.
