Warner Execs Say They Regret Releasing The ‘Snyder Cut’
The release of the so-called the Snyder Cu” was a huge problem for Warner Bros. A recent report stated that this situation has put Zach Snyder’s fans on the opposite side from WB, making the future increasingly difficult for their higher-ups and the DC slate in general.
A report from Rolling Stone also mentions that the pressure for the release of the “Snyder Cut” was boosted by an army of bots, thus creating a fake scenario of fan support for that version. Zach Snyder was initially the movie director but had to pass the baton to The Avengers director Joss Whedon. Whedon ended up with a completely different view of the movie than Snyder’s. After the 2016 Justice League release, fans started calling out for the original idea. When Justice League premiered there was a whole debate about WB interference with the directions chosen, leading to bad management of the process as a whole. Critiques varied from Superman’s CGI-erased mustache to the color palette, but the main issue was the disappointing box office. Snyder’s cut of the movie only came in 2021 through HBO Max. It arrived on streaming in two different versions: one in color and another in black and white called “Justice is Gray”.
The existence of the “Snyder Cut” is, according to a Variety article, a huge problem for Warner. This created a situation completely favorable toward Zach Snyder’s persona and not the creative process in the studio. By favoring one director and his “Snyderverse” - a series of movies based on his style and choices - fans partially marginalized other ideas that didn’t involve Snyder. A certain point was reached that WB has denied the existence of this cut altogether, trying to correct the course previously taken.
Although other DC movies like Joaquin Phoenix’s “Joker” and Robert Pattinson’s “The Batman” were extremely successful at the box office, Warner’s future is still up in the air. Ezra Miller’s recent struggles with the law have made things very difficult for Warner since “The Flash” and its major comic-book storyline “Flashpoint” could’ve hit the refresh button on DC. August was tough for WB as well. Lots of DC projects were also either postponed or canceled, leaving them in major financial turmoil.
