Rumor: 'The Mandalorian' Season 3 Will Release Late 2022 According to Production Schedule

Disney+ and Star Wars have a lot on the plate coming up, but none may be more anticipated than the next season of The Mandalorian. While Season 3 was confirmed in December 2020, news about the series has been sparse and official release dates have yet to be announced. Meanwhile, we continue to hear about other Star Wars properties shooting and moving forward. Last we saw The Mandalorian, at the end of Season 2 we were left with a satisfying climax, but also a lot of questions. Would Grogu be back for Season 3? Would he be back with Din Djarin? What will Luke teach Grogu? How will Din and Bo Katan deal with Din’s possession of the Darksaber? What is next for Din? The Mandalorian has us so invested in all these characters, and fans want to know what will be happening next.

But there will be a large gap in between the end of Season 2 and the start of Season 3. Disney was hoping to deliver Season 3 at the end of this year, but production delays, likely due to Covid-19, delayed those plans. Information obtained from Production Weekly states that the Season 3 shooting schedule will start on September 20, 2021 and run through March 23, 2022. With these delays, the initial intended production start date and hoped for release date no longer seem to be the case. Now late 2022 seems to be the new probable release date, considering how long it will take to edit and complete post production for the series.

Disney has plenty of other Star Wars options to fill the void with The Mandalorian delays. It looks likely that The Book of Boba Fett will be released in the Winter of 2021, taking the place of when people assumed season 3 of The Mandalorian would premier. Also waiting in the wings, we have Star Wars: Obi Wan Kenobi which is still currently in production and looking at a summer 2022 release. Star Wars: Andor is currently in production as well and also looking at a Summer 2022 release. Not to be forgotten, Star Wars: Visions will premiere right around the corner on September 22, 2021.

The question now is if the new Disney+ Star Wars shows, Andor, Obi Wan Kenobi, and Book of Boba Fett, can keep the positive momentum going that The Mandalorian has created. There was a lot of negative energy surrounding the Prequels and then, a decade later, the Sequel trilogy, especially the recently released Rise of Skywalker. However, The Mandalorian has received large amounts of acclaim that Star Wars ventures have not received in a long time. The Mandalorian was even nominated for several Emmy’s, in categories other than special effects, including back-to-back nominations for Outstanding Drama Series. Yes, Star Wars was robbed at the Academy Awards back in 1978 when Annie Hall beat out Star Wars for Best Picture, but the Star Wars saga has been away from the awards circuit for years until The Mandalorian.

All of this excitement keeps the pressure on Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni to keep The Mandalorian going with the high-quality story and action that the fans have grown accustomed to. But these two have earned Star Wars fans’ trust with their work in The Mandalorian and Filoni's work on Clone Wars. Can they keep the momentum going and turn out another scintillating season of The Mandalorian? We can only hope so. But there isn't anyone else many fans would trust with The Mandalorian… or little Grogu’s future.
