Official Trailer For ‘Doctor Strange 2’ Drops

By the hoary hosts of Hoggoth! The trailer for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is here, and it is glorious. As someone who is a massive fan of the first Doctor Strange film and the character in general, I am beyond excited for this film. The first Doctor Strange was an underappreciated gem of the MCU that cemented magic as a vital part of the MCU going forward. Now, it looks like the sequel will cement the multiverse as a major part of the MCU going forward. This will also allegedly be Marvel’s first trip into the horror genre, which opens all new possibilities for the film. This also seems to be what Phase 4 of the MCU has been building to. WARNING, there may be some spoilers ahead.

We have known for a while that Wanda Maximoff, now officially known as the Scarlet Witch, would play a major role in the film. A lot of people were wondering if she would be the film’s antagonist. Based on WandaVision, it is reasonable to assume that she would take on a more villainous role while trying to bring her kids back, and Doctor Strange would have to try to stop her.  However, the trailer shows Wanda living a quiet life, and has tried to move past her mistake. Doctor Strange also does not appear to be interested in what happened in Westview. The trailer suggests that Doctor Strange and Scarlet Witch will have to work together to solve whatever problem has been created with the multiverse.

The trailer also shows us the return of Chiwetel Ejiofor’s Baron Mordo. The first Doctor Strange showed Mordo going renegade after Strange used the time stone to defeat Dormammu. He claimed that the world was sick with too many wizards, and he aimed to put a stop to that. Now, he has returned, and the trailer might also give a clue about his motives. In the trailer, he states that “the greatest threat to our universe is you,” referring to Stephen Strange. The trailer then reveals an evil version of Doctor Strange that some fans have speculated could be the same evil Strange we see in What If... If that is true, then What If... has just become way more important to the MCU. It would also open up a ton of possibilities for future multiverse stories.

We also see other characters making their debut appearance. The first is Xochitl Gomez as America Chavez, aka. Miss America. In the comics, she has some multi-dimensional abilities that would be a major asset when traveling through the multiverse. Strange is also fighting a tentacled alien creature who has been the debate of several fans. Some think it is Marvel’s eldritch terror Shuma-Gorath, while others think it is Gargantos who is originally a Sub-Mariner. Either of these characters would be amazing to see in the film. If it is Gargantos, that would open the door for Namor to swim into the MCU, which they have already hinted at previously. On the other hand, Suma-Gorath is a cosmic being of nigh unlimited power. He could open the door to countless other cosmic beings for Strange to fight.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness looks amazing regardless of which villain the creatures turn out to be. Doctor Strange and Wanda are definitely going to have their work cut out for them. They will have to go up against Baron Mordo, and evil Strange, and either a cosmic being or sea monster, all while traveling through multiple universes. They explored the multiverse in Spiderman: No Way Home, but now they are diving headfirst into it. I have a feeling the trailer is only the tip of the iceberg for what the final film will feature. It is a good time to be a Marvel and Doctor Strange fan, and May cannot come soon enough.
