This past Friday (February 17) saw the opening ceremony of the Super Nintendo World park at Universal Studios in Los Angeles. For the occasion, during his opening speech, Universal Parks & Resorts Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Mark Woodbury announced the addition of a similar resort to Orlando’s Universal Studios park.

He said, “Soon, we’re going to add another Super Nintendo World to Universal Orlando Resort,” jokingly adding that this news may have been “the worst-kept secret in history.”

The Super Nintendo World at the Universal Orlando Resort is set to be part of the future Epic Universe park, a wider project that was announced in 2019 and is expected to open in 2025. The epic Universal project of 750 acres is expected to welcome new and old IPs, possibly coming from current studio partners like DreamWorks or Illumination, whose Minions already have a dedicated zone coming next year. More details will arrive “in the months ahead.”

The opening of the Super Nintendo World building coincides magnificently with the upcoming The Super Mario Bros. Movie set to release on April 7, 2023. In fact, Chris Pratt, who voiced Mario in the movie, was spotted at the resort this Friday, and Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto was present at the ceremony to count down to the opening of the building to the public.

These projects are part of Universal’s plan to expand its resort presence throughout the world. More regional parks and attractions are set to open in the upcoming years, including family-friendly theme parks similar to the ones announced in Texas and Las Vegas. Of course, Nintendo will also continue to be intertwined with Universal’s expansion plans as one Super Nintendo World, which includes a Mario Kart attraction, opened last year in Japan, and another one is planned for Singapore.
