Ubisoft Says List Of Steam Games Being Decommissioned On September 1st Will Still Be Playable
In a somewhat confusing sequence of events, Steam put up notices that a group of Ubisoft games will be decommissioned and “will not be accessible” starting September 1st. However, according to Ubisoft, this notice is misleading; only DLC and online/multiplayer features will be affected by this change. The base games will still be accessible to current owners.
The games affected by these changes are Anno 2070, Assassin’s Creed II, Assassin’s Creed III (2012 release), Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood, Assassin’s Creed Liberation HD, Assassin’s Creed Revelations, Driver San Francisco, Far Cry 3 (2012 release), Ghost Recon Future Soldier, Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands, Rayman Legends, Silent Hunter 5, Space Junkies, Splinter Cell: Blacklist, and ZombiU.

The original messages found on Steam were quite alarming; phrases such as “no longer available for sale” and “will not be accessible following September 1st” definitely convey a sense of finality. It would be unusual for Steam to completely revoke access to a game without offering any sort of refund, and players were justifiably concerned. But an interview with Ubisoft communications manager Jessica Roache may put our minds at ease:
“As stated in our support article, only DLCs and online features will be affected by the upcoming decommissioning. Current owners of those games will still be able to access, play, or download them. Our teams are working with our partners to update this information across all storefronts and are also assessing all available options for players who will be impacted when these games’ online services are decommissioned on September 1st, 2022.”
So it appears that current owners of these games can rest easy; they will still have access to the base games, but with no access to DLC or online features. Those who don’t yet own these games will have until September 1st to purchase them before they are decommissioned. While steps such as these are always disappointing, hopefully, they will pave the way for new, exciting projects from Ubisoft in the coming years.
