Director Jon Watts Compares 'Spider-Man: No Way Home' to 'Avengers: Endgame'

With almost every Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) fan’s attention pointed directly at the upcoming Spider-Man: No Way Home, director Jon Watts has shared his thoughts on the film, calling it Spider-Man’s own Endgame. No Way Home is still scheduled for a December 17 release and fans cannot wait to see what the titular character’s third outing will look like. This will be the fourth installment in Phase 4 of the MCU, and will see the return of Tom Holland as Spider-Man aka. Peter Parker, Marisa Tomei as Auntie May, Zendaya as MJ, Jon Favreau as Happy Hogan, with J. K. Simmons reprising his role as J. Jonah Jameson from the Far From Home post-credits scene. Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange and Benedict Wong’s Wong will also be featured in the film.

This is what we know so far of Spider-Man: No Way Home from its teaser trailer. Following the finale of Far From Home, Peter Parker is now having to live in a world where everyone knows he is Spider-Man. In the previous film, Mysterio has revealed the web-slinger’s greatest secret, and essentially framed him for the massive drone attack in London as well as his own demise This leads Peter to the door of our resident Sorcerer Supreme. He asks Doctor Strange for his help in erasing the reveal from everyone’s memory. Against Wong’s advice, Doctor Strange creates a spell which will make everyone forget Peter’s secret identity as Spider-Man. However, during the ritual, Peter begins to question whether MJ and Aunt May will still remember. This seems to cause issues with the spell and results in some catastrophic consequences for the entire multiverse with villains from other Spider-Man universes ending up in the MCU.

Rumors have been circulating for months that Andrew Garfield and Toby Maguire may be reprising their respective interpretations of the web-slinger. These speculations have yet to be confirmed. What keeps these rumors going strong is the official announcement that Jamie Foxx will be returning as Electro (from Garfield’s Amazing Spider-Man universe), and Alfred Molina as Otto Octavius aka. Doc Ock (from Maguire’s Spider-Man universe). The teaser trailer released last month also hinted at the return of Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin from Maguire’s first Spider-Man outing. With the appearance of these villains, it is safe to say that this movie is going to be quite a trip.

No Way Home’s director Jon Watts has shared what he thinks about the upcoming film. In speaking with Empire, he calls the film “ambitious,” and compares it to Avengers: Endgame.

We’re definitely trying to be ambitious. It’s Spider-Man: Endgame”

On top of new and returning characters from other versions of the franchise, we will also see the main players from Holland’s first two outings, namely Ned (Jacob Batalon), Betty Brant (Angourie Rice), Flash Thompson (Tony Revolori), Mr. Dell (J. B. Smoove) and Mr. Harrignton (Martin Starr). In addition, thanks to the post-credits scene in Venom: Let There Be Carnage, fans are also thinking that the appearance of Tom Hardy’s Venom may be on the cards as well.

Regardless of whether the rumors come to fruition, there are still a big cast of characters that will be showing up throughout No Way Home. Thus, Jon Watts’ comment concerning this being like Endgame makes a lot of sense. After all, we will be seeing other heroes from the current MCU, and figures from Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy and Marc Webb’s Amazing Spider-Man duology. These crossovers will result in the characters fighting for that screen time.

Spider-Man: No Way Home is set to hit theaters on December 17, 2021. As always, we will keep you posted on any new information or news as and when it happens.

Until next time!
