Warner Brothers released the first trailer for A Minecraft Movie, and fans are already deeply divided on the film’s aesthetics. The movie follows a live-action cast as they are sucked into a cubic world based on the Minecraft games. The trailer provided a first look at Jack Black as Steve and Jason Momoa as Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison. Other cast members include Emma Myers, Danielle Brooks, Sebastian Eugene Hansen, and Jennifer Coolidge.

Minecraft fans criticized the merging of live-action characters with CGI environments, claiming that an entirely animated film would have been a better look. The realistic look of the animals was another point of contention. The official synopsis reads, “Welcome to the world of Minecraft, where creativity doesn’t just help you craft, it’s essential to one’s survival. Four misfits…find themselves struggling with ordinary problems when they are pulled through a mysterious portal into the Overworld: a bizarre cubic wonderland that thrives on imagination.”

The synopsis continues, “To get back home, they'll have to master this world (and protect it from evil things like Piglins and Zombies, too) while embarking on a magical quest with an unexpected, expert crafter, Steve (Black). Together, their adventure will challenge all five to be bold and to reconnect with the qualities that make each of them uniquely creative... the very skills they need to thrive back in the real world.” The movie comes to theaters and IMAX screens on April 4, 2025.
