Todd Phillips 'Joker 2: Folie Á Deux' Will Be Released In Fall 2024

DC
Joaquin Phoenix as The Joker

Over the last two days, DC fans have been sent through a rollercoaster of emotions as rumors swirl about another change for the lineup of films off the back of the Batgirl movie’s cancellation as an aftermath of the Warner Bros. Discovery merger. Unfortunately, little appears to be safe amid the company’s overhaul. But today, a silver lining appeared when the company revealed a release date and trailer for the sequel to Joker.

Being the first R-rated movie to surpass a billion dollars at the box office with only a $55 million budget, it was only a matter of time until the company demanded a sequel. Unfortunately, two things stood in the way: Todd Phillips was vocal that he didn’t believe the film needed a sequel, and Joaquin Phoenix had never done a sequel in his career. While this looked to be a problem for Warner Bros initially, Phoenix quickly jumped on the idea of reprising the character, with Phillips soon following suit under one condition, “It would have to have a real thematic resonance the way this [first] one did, ultimately being about childhood trauma and the lack of love, and the loss of empathy.”

Today, DC confirmed that Joker: Folie à Deux would hit theaters on October 4th, 2024. To ramp up the excitement even more, they released a small teaser that confirms Lady Gaga will be starring alongside Joaquin Phoenix. There has been speculation that Gaga will be playing a new iteration of Harley Quinn, as well as that this film will be a musical, but little is known about the plot at this point. The title translates to insanity shared by two people, so expect as much of Gaga as we will Phoenix.
