Earlier this week, Marvel fans were in for a fun surprise when Tom Holland (Peter Parker/Spider-Man), Jacob Batalon (Ned), and Zendaya (Michelle) all dropped pictures from their third Spider-Man film together, accompanied by different fake titles. The buzz immediately started as people wondered what the title would be for the film since the stars were trying to throw fans off the scent.

On February 24, Sony Pictures officially posted a video announcing the actual title of the movie: Spider-Man: No Way Home. And interestingly enough, it connects to the fake titles that Tom Holland, Jacob Batalon, and Zendaya added to the pictures they posted on their Instagram accounts.

On Tom Holland’s Instagram, @tomholland2013, he posted a picture with title: Spider-Man Phone Home and the caption:

“So excited to announce the new Spider-Man title. Can’t wait for you lot to see what we have been up to. Love from Atlanta.”

On Jacob Batalon’s Instagram, @lifeisaloha, he posted a different picture with a different title: Spider-Man: Home-Wrecker, and the caption:

“We’re so excited to share the TITLE of our new movie!! Swipe right for the big reveal!!🤩😝😱also enjoy this exclusive still from the movie, just an extra gift from us😘”

Zendaya followed it up with a different photo and yet another title: Spider-Man: Home Slice, with the caption:

“So excited to announce the new Spider-Man title. So proud of this one...FOS is back! (Friends of Spider-Man)”

With the reveal of the real title, Spider-Man: No Way Home, it sounds like Spider-Man is going to get into some very big trouble, and, well, not be able to find his way home. This title also connects with the fake titles that Tom Holland, Jacob Batalon, and Zendaya gave.

Tom Holland’s fake title, Spider-Man: Phone Home, calls on the same trend of the other two Spider-Man movies names with the use of the word “home.” This one creates even more distance, however, than the previous ones, and gives a great nod to E.T. With Jacob Batalon’s title, Spider-Man: Home-Wrecker, and Zendaya’s title, Spider-Man: Home Slice, they still play on the “home” theme, and there is a good chance that this film will be playing into the multiverse angle. After all, the title Spider-Man: No Way Home definitely suggests something way out of this world.

While Marvel and Sony have yet to confirm the rumors that this movie does revolve around the multiverse, it would make sense because of the tricks that Mysterio pulls in Spider-Man: Far From Home. Mysterio manages to deceive the world into thinking that there are other planes of existence. And in the post-credit scene cameo with J.K. Simmons as J. Jonah Jameson, perhaps everything is, in fact, connected. Doctor Strange certainly plays into this concept of the multiverse, and with the second movie coming out soon as well, there’s a good chance we will see some crossover. After Evan Peters’ Quicksilver from Fox’s X-Men films showed up in WandaVision a few weeks ago, it seems entirely plausible that Marvel Studios is going the direction of the multiverse plot line.

There was also a rumor going around that both Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield were going to reprise their roles as their versions of Spider-Man, but Marvel has not confirmed this, and recently Tom Holland said in an interview with Esquire that this was not going to be the case.

Spider-Man: No Way Home is said to have Doctor Strange take over the role of mentor for Peter Parker. We don’t know yet who the main villain will be as there is no formal casting announced by Marvel, but rumors have circulated that director Jon Watts’ dream would be to have Kraven the Hunter as the villain.

Spider-Man: No Way Home promises to be the biggest installment of Marvel’s Spider-Man yet. Tom Holland recently told Yahoo:

“This film is incredibly ambitious, and I’m delighted to say we’re succeeding in making it. It’s going really well. We watched a fight scene that we shot a few weeks, and I’ve never seen a fight scene quite like it in the MCU. I’m really excited for audiences to see that.”

Spider-Man: No Way Home is currently filming in Atlanta, Georgia. Its release date is currently set for December 17, 2021.
